In a recent article Peggy Sue Martinez explained her support for a new campaign entitled “Please Help, Don’t Give.” Summarily, signs printed with this motto are to be placed around Española with the goal of discouraging the “giving to panhandlers and encourage donating to local charities instead.”
While it is ironic that the “season of giving” was chosen as a time to initiate the project, this initiative also lacks social and moral insight. It is ineffective, dehumanizing and classist.
For instance, the language used in the article itself refers to “panhandlers.” This label is in effect denying people the dignity of being human. To use such an expression equates people more to stray dogs, than to brethren who are in need of our compassion.
Additionally, I could not find one program-connecting list of “agencies that are helping the homeless.” So there is no easily obtained, concrete, relational action opportunity here. It is just a sign and hollow suggestion.
Finally, how does this initiative address root issues, such as poverty, drug addiction, and systemic failure? It does not. It is merely placing a band aid on an amputated limb, while suggesting to the patient to stop bleeding.
Martinez wished to “get the word out.” My word is this: Neither I nor anyone in my family, will seek the product or service of any business that displays this sign or supports this initiative. I will encourage others to do the same.
