The Española Valley High School wrestling team lost a trio of non-district matches during a duals meet at Albuquerque Academy on May 7, falling against Academy, Bloomfield and Aztec.

Against Academy, the Sundevils nearly snuck out a win, and Landon Atencio, Cruz Sandoval, Simon Montoya and Aaron Altamirano all won their matches. Altamirano and Atencio also won their matches against Bloomfield.

The Sundevils host a quad meet on Wednesday (5/12), and are scheduled to host Pojoaque, Los Alamos, Robertson and West Las Vegas. They hope to give themselves a chance to compete for the district title later in the month.

The Española boys tennis team finished second in a quad match May 7, ahead of Robertson and Capital, while the girls team finished third.

Both teams have a 3-4 record on the season, according to Maxpreps. Sophia Sena is 4-3 in 1 singles for the girls team, and Orlando Velador is 6-3 for the boys in 1 singles while Adam Gonzales has a 4-1 record in 1 singles.

The next match for the Sundevils is May 20 in a district match at home against Moriarty.

Española baseball split a pair of games over the last week for a 3-4 record on the season.

On May 4 against Santa Fe High School, they recorded a 10-9 win over the Demons.

The Sundevils fell at home May 6 against the undefeated at the time St. Pius X Sartans, with a seven-run fourth inning too much to overcome in a 14-5 loss. Jordan Bell had three hits, and Craig Calvert pitched effectively in relief.

The Sundevils have one more non-district game when they play at Sandia Prep on Friday, and then host Pojoaque in a doubleheader on Saturday.

The Española softball team similarly split a pair of games over the last week, and finish non-district play at 4-2 after a strong offensive start to the season.

The Sundevils stayed hot when Ashley Osegueda hit a home run and had four RBIs in a 16-4 win at Santa Fe, and Trinity Ortega had five RBIs. Camille Hernandez pitched a complete game with nine strikeouts in five innings.

Their hot streak came to an end in a home loss to St. Pius X on April 6, losing 12-1 in five innings. Marissa Abeyta had two hits including a double, but the pitching could not calm down the Sartans.

Española opens up district play with a doubleheader at home against Pojoaque on Saturday.

The Pojoaque Baseball team split a doubleheader with Bloomfield over the weekend to move to 2-1 on the season.

Joel Gonzales had a home run and two doubles in the first game, and pitched a complete game with three runs allowed and 11 strikeouts, and Pojoaque won 8-3.

The pitching struggled in game two, though, and despite two doubles from Tse-Whang Pena, the Elks lost 14-3.

The Elks took on St. Michael’s on the road on May 11, and next have a doubleheader at Española on Saturday.

Pojoaque Softball defeated St. Michael’s on May 10, 15-1, and now owns a 2-3 record this season before starting district play this week.

Earlier in the week, the Elkettes lost two games of a doubleheader at Bernalillo, falling 11-6 against Aztec and 17-0 to Bernalillo.

The Elks next travel to Española to face the Sundevils for a doubleheader on Saturday.

The McCurdy softball team started with a win on May 6 against the Española junior varsity team, finishing off a run-rule victory in the sixth inning, 17-5.

Olivia Cantrell had four hits and a walk, including a triple, and Jeneva Serrano also reached base five times in the win. Serrano and Erin Lomayama combined for the victory in the circle.

The Bobcats continue their non-district schedule with a doubleheader on the road against Santa Rose on Saturday, and host Raton for two games Monday.

The McCurdy Bobcats baseball team opened their season Tuesday with a road doubleheader against Raton for a pair of non-district games.

The Bobcats did not have a chance to start last season after athletics were canceled in early March at the start of the pandemic.

Two years ago, they finished 13-5 and were undefeated in the district, but lost in the state quarterfinals as the No. 6 seed. The 2015 and 2016 state finalists will look to return to that spot this year.
