The Española Valley girls basketball team closed their regular season strong with a pair of wins in the final week.
The Sundevils took down Moriarty, 57-46 on April 27. The Pintos fought hard, and were within four points at halftime, but the Sundevils managed to close strong in front of the empty crowd. Miranda Salazar led the team with 13 pints, and Jasmaine Baca scored 13 that included 15 free-throw attempts. The Sundevils as a team shot 36 free throws in the win, and made 24 of them.
The C team won 70-6 that night after scoring both the first 29 and last 29 points of the game. And the Sundevil junior varsity team won 55-30 when their defense locked in after a slow start.
Against Pojoaque on April 29, the Sundevils took a 21-4 lead to start and never looked back, cruising to an 80-21 win. All 11 players who were active for the game scored, with Salazar at 12 and Jordan Torres and Cameron Conners both in double figures.

The Pojoaque Valley baseball season began last week, with a 5-4 win over Santa Fe High School on April 27.
The Elks took the lead with a 3-run seventh inning, and Joel Gonzales and Zach Fresquez held strong on the mound. Gonzales also had a double, and three hits and two RBIs in the win.
After a 2020 season that was cut short, the Elks look to rebound from a 6-20 year in 2019.

The Elkettes softball season began last week with a 1-1 start to the year.
They took a run-rule win to start the season at home against Santa Fe High School April 27, 17-7 in five innings, including a 7-run second inning. Senior Jessica Roybal had three hits on the day and four RBIs, while Madison Gonzales had a triple in her only plate appearance.
April 30, they fell 18-5 against Bernalillo in five innings, but Roybal hit a triple and had another three RBIs.
The Elkettes look to return to the state tournament after losing a play-in game to end their last full season.

Pojoaque girls basketball ended their season on a winning note with a May 1 victory over Los Alamos, 41-30.
In a season marked by tragedy and hardships, the Elkettes managed to pull out four wins, including two over the Hilltoppers.
In their loss to Española, seven Elkettes scored, with sophomore Amaya Gonzales leading the way with five points, and just two points coming from seniors.
The Elkettes will look to rebound next year and return to their spot as one of the top teams in the state.

The Pojoaque boys basketball team ended their season with a loss in an overtime thriller, 65-60. The Elks came back from down 13 points at halftime, but 15 points from the Hilltoppers was too much to overcome in a 65-60 loss.
Lukus Archibeque led the team with 18 points, and Derek Sanchez added 17.
The Elks finish their season at 3-8 and 2-6 in the district, but first-year coach Jason Mossman was proud of the team not losing any game by more than 13 points.

The Mesa Vista Lady Trojans basketball team ended their season on a positive note, with a 38-33 win over Evangel Christian on April 30 ending a 3-9 regular season.
Previously that week, the Lady Trojans lost 50-48 to Peñasco, and 57-41 to Mora.
Mesa Vista finishes their season a disappointing 3-9 overall and 2-6 in the district, but showed bright spots under first-year coach Leonard Torrez with a very young team.

The Trojan boys also finished their season with a win, taking a 42-41 come-from-behind victory over Mora on April 29.
Two days earlier, they had lost 57-38 to Peñasco.
The Trojans end their season with a 3-9 overall record and a 2-8 district mark, but lose just one senior from the team.
