Only Rio Arriba County Girl Scout Snubbed by City

Published:

Dear Editor,

I would like to first thank the Abiquiú community for their love and support of our daughter and her Girl Scout cookie sales. Abiquiú families support traditional family values. Parenting Rio Arriba County’s only registered Girl Scout has been an honor and a pleasure, and while traditional community programs like Girl Scouts and 4-H are dying, we continue to see the values.

It was, however, sad to see the front area receptionist at Jemez Co-op and the front-of-the-office staff at Española City Hall turn our daughter away and demonstrate a lack of support of our local youth.

We want to see change, we want to stamp out addiction and promote positive clubs and activities for kids, but when they show up we turn a cheek. Española, what are we doing? Where is our community leadership on this? Our daughter was selling cookies, nothing more. She was dressed as a Girl Scout!

When will our mayor and community leadership show up for our youth? Support youth programs today and let your votes be your voice at election time! Everyone is so busy trying to keep their job they forget how to do their job!

Rio Arriba County is bleeding and we can’t even put a band aid on a bullet wound. Mi gente, we need to do better! We are losing lives daily and our town is not safe to walk around. I beg you to support our youth. It must start somewhere!

Respectfully,

Dr. LeAnne Montoya

Parent and Rio Arriba County taxpayer
