Police Blotter: A Stick Wrapped in Barbed Wire? Not Suspicious at All

The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.

 Española Police officers, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies or State Police responded to the following calls:

  

Roaming wolf dogs

June 12

3:18 a.m. A 420 Emporia caller said a shirtless man was walking around and his pants were falling down and exposing him.

7:49 a.m. A caller reported she’s been having issues with her 17-year-old granddaughter who’s been cussing her out and slamming the door.

8:06 a.m. A Dixon caller said there are 13 wolf dogs on the loose.

8:11 a.m. A Calle Ranchitos caller reported a break-in last night and that his screen was cut and his wallet stolen.

9:51 a.m. Velarde said there are three government trucks going about 100 mph without any lights on.

10:13 a.m. An El Guique caller reported seven batteries were taken.

12:48 p.m. A deputy detained a man who tried to run after a traffic stop in Alcalde.

12:48 p.m. A woman was outside of EPD, requesting a welfare check on her brother, who is homeless. She said the boyfriend’s girlfriend was killed and she hasn’t heard from her brother in a month-and-a-half.

1:04 p.m. A Fairview Sonic caller reported a person paid with a counterfeit $100 bill and left.

1:49 p.m. A Subway caller said a man is outside, stabbing himself with a blade.

3:33 p.m. An overdose was reported on Camino Habitat after someone called to report an accident. One woman died and medics were working on a man.

4:27 p.m. A woman’s death was reported in Velarde.

4:56 p.m. A caller said a woman was punching and kicking a man in the face near Lovin’ Oven.

5:38 p.m. A man whom a caller suspected of being under the influence, was acting disorderly and running up behind people in the Mariscos la Playa parking lot.

5:40 p.m. A caller reported a man at the skate park was arguing with teenagers. The responding officer discovered a 14-year-old boy had been beat in the back of the head and an ambulance was requested.

5:53 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a young boy who ran out of a vehicle at El Llano Road and Pima Road and was chased by someone.

8:14 p.m. A Dollar General in Española caller reported drug paraphernalia was found in the store.

8:38 p.m. An overdose was reported outside of Anytime Fitness.

9:47 p.m. An Abiquiú caller said a woman tried to get her in the car and hit her in the head; she felt like she was losing consciousness.

June 13

8:16 a.m. A Dixon caller said someone in the area has hybrid wolf dogs running around.

9:04 a.m. A Hernandez caller reported she has a restraining order on a man who is at her house.

9:39 a.m. A N.M. Treatment Center caller said a man is trying to steal a car and a woman is running after the car.

9:49 a.m. A Chamita caller reported a 6-year-old boy showed up with a shovel and said he’s looking for work. The boy did not know where he lived and said he doesn’t have a family.

12:23 p.m. A 420 Emporia caller said a man keeps falling on the ground and an employee is throwing water on him.

12:35 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man on an ankle monitor who took fentanyl, hoping to overdose. It was determined the man didn’t take anything, but felt suicidal.

1:09 p.m. A Velarde caller said her daughter has been calling 911 to file a police report for stolen medication but dispatch isn’t helping her.

1:39 p.m. A weed eater was stolen from Calle del Rio.

4:52 p.m. A caller reported there are homeless people near Murphy’s Express and a man is throwing rocks in the road.

5:22 p.m. A Dairy Queen caller said a man was near the medical box, had it open and was messing with stuff inside.

5:40 p.m. A Chimayó caller reported a man is threatening to go over to his brother’s house and kill him, then commit suicide.

5:44 p.m. A Fairview Sonic caller said her ex-boyfriend went to her place of employment, threw a drink at her, then left.

7:04 p.m. A North Coronado Avenue caller reported her daughter’s boyfriend hit the daughter and she’s bleeding from the neck.

8:40 p.m. A Walmart caller said a car in the parking lot has a sign in the window that says “jerk for 20 dollars.”

9:29 p.m. A Santa Clara caller reported a woman took her phone and has been tracking it with an app.

9:40 p.m. A La Joya Street caller said his storage unit was broken into.

10:23 p.m. A Tierra Amarilla caller reported someone was breaking into a house. He became irate and refused to give a dispatcher his name.

 

Calm down, auntie

June 14

2:45 a.m. A Jicarilla caller said his drunk aunt is fighting and hitting him.

7:06 a.m. A man’s death was reported in Hernandez.

7:22 a.m. A caller said there were five homeless people in a dugout at Ranchitos Park.

9:09 a.m. A Hernandez caller reported her neighbor’s friend is inside her house and won’t let her in.

9:29 a.m. A Velarde caller said a 15-year-old is not breathing. CPR was performed and Narcan was administered, however he died.

9:55 a.m. A caller reported six people were burning flags at the Veterans Memorial Wall. It was determined that the flags were burnt because they were retired.

10:58 a.m. A Dixon caller said protesters were at the intersection of MM 19 and N.M. Highway 68, holding signs that said “86 47.”

11:05 a.m. A man went to EPD to speak with an officer because someone called the police, falsely claiming he had a warrant.

12:22 p.m. A La Mesilla caller wanted to speak with a deputy because a woman keeps going onto their property and harassing residents.

12:40 p.m. A CVS caller said a man who’s trespassed was at the pharmacy.

2:19 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on people living behind El Parasol because the children look malnourished and go outside naked.

3:16 p.m. A man threatened a Verizon Wireless employee after a disagreement over a restocking fee.

3:38 p.m. An El Llano Road caller reported her vehicle was gone after she left it running in the driveway.

4:06 p.m. A patient at the Española Hospital claimed she was assaulted near Sacred Heart Church.

4:22 p.m. A Speedway caller reported being assaulted by a man who fled in a truck.

4:56 p.m. Two shirtless people were fist-fighting at Goodwill.

5:23 p.m. A caller said a woman drove up and threw a cup of liquid at protesters at Lowdermilk Street and North Riverside Drive.

5:31 p.m. A Walmart manager was battered after an altercation with two drunk and disorderly people.

6:14 p.m. A Walmart caller said two drunk men assaulted a store manager and the police let them go. The men were threatening to go back to the store and the caller wanted to speak with an EPD sergeant.

6:37 p.m. A Chimayó caller reported a woman is at her parents’ house and is yelling from the arroyo. The responding deputy called for an ambulance because the screaming woman was hallucinating.

7:36 p.m. A North McCurdy Road caller said a woman at their gate “looks out of it.”

9:19 p.m. An Alcalde caller reported a drunk woman was out of control.

9:50 p.m. A caller said a man with his pants down is dancing on Old Hospital Road and North Riverside Drive.

9:58 p.m. A caller reported a man was lying in the middle of Old Hospital Road.

10:20 p.m. A man was “tweaking” and walking around inside Mariscos la Playa.

11:47 p.m. An Ohkay Owingeh caller reported a loud band was playing in the area of White Swan Road. 

 

Beat up on Sesame Street

June 15

1:34 a.m. A Calle Redonda caller said a man has a machete and won’t let her leave.

1:36 a.m. A Velarde caller reported her girlfriend won’t let her leave and closed the gate on her.

1:41 a.m. A caller said his mother was beaten on Sesame Street.

2:32 a.m. A Chama caller reported his wife was having breathing problems. Tierra Amarilla EMS responded, but the woman died.

5:33 a.m. A man’s death was reported at Las Lomas Apartments.

8:55 a.m. A woman’s death was reported in Dixon.

10:05 a.m. A woman said she was assaulted on Fairview Lane and Riley Road and was almost sexually assaulted by a group of people under the bridge.

10:31 a.m. A Calle Redonda caller said drunk woman and a man are driving around, acting disorderly and trying to start fights.

10:45 a.m. A Harley Lane caller reported asking two children on ATVs to slow down. The children then flipped the caller off.

10:56 a.m. A McDonald’s caller said a man was walking around with a large stick wrapped in barbed wire and thinks it’s suspicious.

11:26 a.m. A Dixon caller reported someone was shooting on BLM land earlier and he noticed a bullet hole on a sign on his property.

11:30 a.m. A caller said she and her boyfriend got into a physical fight. The caller was arrested for battery on a peace officer, battery on a household member, resisting arrest and criminal damage.

12:03 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a woman who appeared distraught and was sitting near Romero’s Fruit Stand. A total of four people called to say the woman was walking in the road. A responding officer told the woman not to jump into traffic.

3:15 p.m. A Walmart caller in Aisle 24 said they were spit on by another customer.

4:28 p.m. A Calle del Rancho caller reported the socket behind their microwave started smoking and there was a bad odor. The caller also said some cockroaches came out of the socket after it smoked.

7:24 p.m. A Chimayó caller found a broken window in their living room when they got home from work.

7:43 p.m. A Walmart caller wanted a man trespassed because he was possibly stalking underage employees.

8:21 p.m. A caller said a vehicle was hitting curbs and almost hitting people at the Dreamcatcher Theater.

8:27 p.m. An overdose was reported near Fairview Flowers.

 

Pretending to be homeless

June 16

8:57 a.m. A Chamita caller said a man’s been shooting his gun toward the arroyo since about 6 a.m.

11:36 a.m. An Abiquiú caller reported a large pile of trash contained documents with a person’s name written multiple times. It was determined the person whose name was on the mail had been dead for several years.

12:50 p.m. An overdose was reported in Alcalde. Two doses of Narcan were administered.

2:18 p.m. An officer went to check a house on Camino Rafael because of a mysterious odor. It was determined that someone was dead inside.

2:25 p.m. A caller reported a man at North McCurdy Road and Fairview Lane is pretending to be homeless, but they don’t think he is.

3:34 p.m. An Echo Amphitheater caller said when they returned to their parked car, they noticed the rear passenger window was broken. A wallet, purse, glasses, credit cards, binoculars, camera and a lens were stolen.

5:37 p.m. A man who was trespassed from the Española Pathways Shelter was walking around the property.

6:30 p.m. An Alcalde caller said a truck is behind him, swerving and the driver is tailgating and flipping him off.

6:48 p.m. A Dollar General in Española caller reported a shoplifter fled but left a backpack full of drug paraphernalia behind.

7:31 p.m. A Villa del Norte Apartments caller said a man is knocking on doors, asking for clothes.

9:29 p.m. A 420 Emporia caller reported two or more people are passed out in a vehicle.

June 17

2:18 a.m. A Lowe’s Home Improvement caller said a man was trying to cut the wires securing the wheelbarrows.

9:33 a.m. A Tierra Amarilla caller heard three or four gunshots over his house.

9:54 a.m. A fire was reported in Hernandez.

10:19 a.m. A Calle Cielito Lindo caller wanted to speak with an officer about someone getting into his mailbox and opening his mail.

11:23 a.m. A Truchas caller said her father put a cloth on her face. The father said the daughter is an alcoholic. A responding deputy determined the father put a towel on the daughter’s face because she was drooling excessively.

12:53 p.m. A caller reported a truck was swerving and hitting trash cans, then drove into oncoming traffic on North McCurdy Road and Fairview Lane.

2:50 p.m. A caller said her nephew is having a mental breakdown and being violent. 

4 p.m. A caller said a man was hitting his wife and they were behind Taco Bell.

5:03 p.m. An overdose was reported on Ohkay Bupingeh. One dose of Narcan was administered.

5:25 p.m. A caller said her license plate was stolen and wanted to file a report.

5:25 p.m. A caller reported a fight near Walmart and said several teens were arguing with men and women on bicycles.

7:52 p.m. A Paseo Melendez caller said her brother is at her house, using drugs.

8:33 p.m. A Walmart security guard approached an officer and said a shoplifter maced him and he wants to press charges.

9:11 p.m. A Chimayó caller said a man came over unannounced and has a knife.

Dog prefers cat food

June 18

1:43 a.m. A Ley Street caller reported children and adults were throwing rocks into their yard.

5:02 a.m. An overdose was reported in Hernandez.

7:29 a.m. A Lower San Pedro Road caller said the tires on two of her vehicles were slashed and windows were broken.

8:32 a.m. A South Prince Drive caller reported she and her husband are being harassed by a man they saw on their surveillance cameras.

9:25 a.m. A Ridge Top Road caller said the neighbor’s dog keeps jumping the fence, going to her yard and eating her cat’s food.

10:34 a.m. A caller reported a man broke her vehicle window and kicked her vehicle behind the Paleta Bar.

10:39 a.m. A student at Española Valley High School was threatening to hurt others.

1:01 a.m. A Chamita caller reported her house was broken into and her TVs were stolen.

1:28 a.m. An overdose was reported at the Ohkay Casino. Two doses of Narcan were administered.

1:31 p.m. A caller said the trim on her vehicle’s roof popped off while she was in the wash at Champion Car wash.

2:19 p.m. A customer’s car was stolen from Speedway on Paseo de Oñate.

3:01 p.m. A Brazos caller said a person staying at the neighbor’s house broke into the well house and now the water conditioner isn’t working.

4:34 p.m. A BOLO was issued for a truck because the driver got out and beer bottles fell out. He was last seen headed toward State Road 30 in Española.

5:34 p.m. A woman went to EPD to speak with an officer because she found an air tag in her vehicle and doesn’t know who it belongs to.

5:39 p.m. An overdose was reported on Camino de Roberto. Two doses of Narcan were administered.

7:06 p.m. An Alcalde caller said the ceiling fan caught fire inside the roof.

7:20 p.m. A State Road 76 caller reported his nephew threatened him and said he’s going to hit him.

8:11 p.m. A caller near the Dollar Tree in Española said a homeless person was trying to stab him.

9:22 p.m. A Cordova caller reported someone is shooting fireworks off.

10:59 p.m. Multiple people were fighting near Valdez Park.
