Police Blotter: Calling the Governor Over a Newspaper Vendor

The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.

Española Police officers, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies or State Police responded to the following calls:

  

Too much weed?

July 17

1:44 a.m. A caller reported possible drug activity under the porch at Goodwill.

7:25 a.m. Antojitos Elm Angel was broken into and money was taken from the register and another place in the store.

8:30 a.m. A 13-year-old boy at Cook’s Mobile Home Park passed out from smoking weed.

9:02 a.m. A man crashed his powered parachute at the Española airport.

9:17 a.m. An Alcalde caller said a 91-year-old man who can’t walk got on the tractor and started it. The caller wants an officer to make the man get off the tractor so he doesn’t hurt himself.

12:51 p.m. A truck hit the fence at the Española City Compound and damaged it.

1:42 p.m. An All State caller reported a person is sleeping on the roof.

3:31 p.m. A caller said homeless people took a bunch of tires to the ditch at Carr Lane and Starlighter Loop and are making a dam or a house.

6:59 p.m. A caller reported a man and woman were physically fighting in the Santa Cruz Country Store parking lot.

7:21 p.m. A caller said a 1-year-old boy had boiling water spilled on him.

9:54 p.m. A Calle Vigil caller reported a woman was standing in the area and a man was hiding in a tree.

11 p.m. A Chimayó caller said they could hear a lot of arguing, whistling and revving engines.

11:09 p.m. A Lybrook caller reported a possible meth overdose.

July 18

12:32 a.m. A caller said a man with one shoe off was down and unresponsive by the stop sign on Spruce Street and North Paseo de Oñate.

1:53 a.m. A Chimayó caller reported a Chevy Silverado was stolen an hour ago.

3:05 a.m. An overdose was reported on Calle del Sol.

3:36 a.m. A psyche patient left the Española Hospital and a caller was asking for help in finding and returning her.

3:58 a.m. A Calle de Pajarito caller said her husband locked her out of the house and she just wants to go to bed.

6:40 a.m. A Camino de las Animas caller reported his girlfriend is upset because she thinks they are going to break up, so she punched him in the face, was throwing rocks at his truck, then threw his stuff in the yard.

9:17 a.m. A caller said there was a drunk man walking on the road near Amber Care.

9:20 a.m. An Abiquiú caller wanted a welfare check on his caregiver because he hasn’t spoken to him in two days. He didn’t know the address, but said he knows how to get there. The responding deputy said the area is too big to find the caregiver’s house and asked for the call to be closed.

12:39 p.m. A Hernandez caller said he allowed a man to stay with him and now he’s threatening his life, pushing him and messing up his house.

1:24 p.m. A KFC caller reported a man was washing cars in the parking lot.

3:18 p.m. A woman went to EPD to speak with an officer about threatening messages she’s been receiving.

3:41 p.m. A caller said he got a message from a man who got fired from his job. The text message said “now we got to fight nothing else needs to be said and I will be waiting at your house.”

3:53 p.m. A house was broken into on Calle Piñon and the homeowner’s belongings were all over the front yard.

5:49 p.m. A Vallecitos caller said a man had his dogs off leash and when her husband told the man to keep his dogs on a leash, he got aggressive with the husband and wanted to fight him.

8:03 p.m. An Alcalde caller reported his roommate is slamming doors and acting disorderly.

8:26 p.m. A Velarde caller said there’s an ongoing dispute with the neighbor and she found pieces of flagstone thrown on her partner’s grave and thinks the neighbor vandalized it.

9:10 p.m. A caller reported there’s a man lying by the water near the Abiquiú Dam group shelters.

9:54 p.m. An El Rito Campground caller got into an argument with a woman who threatened to stab her.

10:33 p.m. A caller said a car was waiting for him when he got out of work at O’Reilly’s and someone in the car tried to fight him. Later, when he was trying to leave Walmart, he heard gunshots and thinks they were shooting at him.

 

Mysterious knocker

July 19

12:25 a.m. A caller heard several shots fired in the direction of Española Valley High School.

12:26 a.m. A Camino Miramontes heard someone knocking on doors.

12:38 a.m. A Jackrabbit Trail caller could hear noises on their Ring camera, like someone knocking on windows.

12:42 a.m. A Sunset Drive caller heard knocking coming from the neighbor’s house.

12:42 a.m. A North Yucca Street caller said someone was knocking outside their house.

1:02 a.m. A vehicle hit an SUV in the McDonald’s drive-thru and fled.

1:21 a.m. A Lindrith caller said she’s alone and heard a phone go off in her house. She thinks someone’s inside.

2:12 a.m. A possible overdose was reported in Dixon.

2:34 a.m. A caller said a woman told her she’s going to sleep at the plaza. The caller is worried because she was carrying a large bar.

2:37 a.m. An overdose was reported on South Paseo de Oñate. Two doses of Narcan were administered.

3:08 a.m. A man waved down a Santa Fe County Sheriff’s deputy in the Santa Claran Casino Hotel parking lot and said someone was threatening him.

4:46 a.m. A caller was at Center Market and was told by a homeless person that a woman is being beat by a man behind the laundromat.

6:14 am. A South McCurdy Road caller reported a dorm building was broken into and the man is asleep inside.

8:12 a.m. A Hernandez caller wanted to speak with a deputy about squatters on his property that he wants removed.

9:20 a.m. A caller reported a woman is walking south on State Road 76 and appears to have been beat up. Her shirt was torn and her undergarments were exposed.

9:28 a.m. A Calle Amorada caller saw three people outside his house and said one tried to break in.

9:33 a.m. A caller got a message saying her granddaughter is being held hostage by her boyfriend who pulled a gun on her.

9:42 a.m. A caller said his bank account was hacked and a man told him to withdraw $3,000 from the bank.

1:34 a.m. A Medanales caller reported a stray dog has killed 25 of her cats and she’s afraid to go outside with it running around.

11:49 a.m. A Chimayó caller said his father’s cat bit him.

1:17 p.m. A Velarde caller reported a man picked up his mother and threw her on the ground.

1:23 p.m. A caller said people are selling drugs in the Santa Cruz Country Store parking lot and won’t leave.

2:03 p.m. A caller saw a man assault a woman near O’Reilly’s. They were arguing and he punched her twice.

3:04 p.m. A man was lying on the ground on Ley Street and not responding very well.

5:41 p.m. A Hernandez caller said three men and a woman were drunk and fighting with minors.

9:51 p.m. A man was in a fight and bleeding on the ground at the Santa Cruz Country Store.

9:59 p.m. An Ohkay Casino security guard went to check on a man in the parking lot but couldn’t find him. He did find drug paraphernalia in the car though and called the police.

10:15 p.m. A Vallecitos man was drunk and had battery-type injuries.

10:34 p.m. A Chimayó caller said a man was harassing her.

10:51 p.m. A vehicle was trying to jump the curbs at the Rhianna Campground in Abiquiú.

11:15 p.m. A North Monterey Lane woman had a cut on her arm.

July 20

4:43 a.m. A man busted a window and door at Speedway.

9:17 a.m. A Hernandez caller said a shirtless man standing in the middle of the road punched her car as she went by.

9:32 a.m. A man’s death was reported on West Shadowood Lane.

10:15 a.m. An oil truck flipped over in Tierra Amarilla.

12:33 p.m. A Camino Santa Cruz caller said a neighbor stopped him and his son and yelled at them, accusing them of calling animal control on him.

12:49 p.m. A man was knocking on the door at the E-911 Center. When an officer caught up with him, he said he was looking for a cigarette.

3:07 p.m. A group of teenagers was asked multiple times to leave the Abiquiú Dam boat ramp, but refused.

3:26 p.m. A fight was reported between two men and two women in Alcalde.

5:35 p.m. A man walked into the Rio Arriba County Detention Center and wanted to speak with an officer. His hand was bloody and said they need to get him someone before he retaliates.

5:59 p.m. A Rio Arriba County Detention Center inmate was taken to the hospital and was cleared to go back to jail, but he was refusing to cooperate with the guard who accompanied him.

6:24 p.m. A Medanales caller said three people were breaking their windows with pipes.

7:31 p.m. A woman was sitting in her car at the Monastery of Christ in the Desert and was confused. She said she was driving fast and erratic, hoping someone would stop her.

10:35 p.m. A man was threatening to use a gun at the Santa Claran Casino Hotel.

July 21

1:04 a.m. A customer got into an argument with an Allsups employee and refused to leave the property.

7:01 a.m. A woman flagged down a deputy in Medanales to report catalytic converters were being stolen.

7:17 a.m. A Windstream building was broken into.

8:17 a.m. A Tortilla Flats caller wanted to file a report because someone hit their fence.

8:38 a.m. A woman had a rope tied to the railing of the Santa Clara Bridge and around her neck and was making suicidal comments and said she wanted to jump off the bridge.

9:08 a.m. A man was walking around Middle and Lower San Pedro roads, looking through mailboxes.

9:09 a.m. A caller reported her neighbor is posting about her and her family on social media and thinks he wants to harm them.

10:19 a.m. Two men and a woman were pushing each other in Hernandez.

12:48 p.m. A Mykal’s Vapor caller reported a vehicle battery was stolen.

1:34 p.m. A County Road 170 caller said there’s an abandoned vehicle on his property.

1:57 p.m. A Walgreens caller reported two men are on the side of the building, getting high.

2:17 p.m. A Jicarilla caller said her brother shot a woman in the leg.

2:27 p.m. A woman tried to return an item to Walmart that she stole.

3:43 p.m. An El Rito Ranger Station caller said someone turned in a fanny pack that has a loaded gun in it.

4:53 p.m. An overdose was reported in Hernandez. Two doses of Narcan were administered.

5:06 p.m. A Chama caller said a man showed up and tried to fight her husband.

5:43 p.m. A Taco Bell caller reported a man is hitting his wife and punching her in the face.

8:31 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on the owner of the Santa Cruz Country Store because several people were in the store, harassing them.

10:49 p.m. A Jicarilla Game and Fish officer was out with people that had IDs from Mexico and fictitious license plates.

July 22

12:46 a.m. A Rodeway Inn caller said a woman was banging on the lobby door.

2:01 a.m. A woman put sugar in the gas tank of a vehicle on North McCurdy Road.

9:04 a.m. A woman wanted to speak with an EPD officer because she was being threatened.

9:39 a.m. A truck pulling a trailer crashed after hitting the mountainside near Sugar’s BBQ.

9:44 a.m. A man was drunk near the Ohkay Travel Center.

10:02 a.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man violently throwing his hands in the air near Center Market and a woman who looks like a hooker.

12:33 p.m. A DNCU East customer was upset and refusing to leave.

4:34 p.m. A man flashed a gun at another man at Española Pathways Shelter and made a death threat, then told him he better get his (expletive) together.

4:51 p.m. A caller said people are fighting on State Road 76.

5:35 p.m. A caller reported people are fighting in the trees between Las Lomas Apartments and the Capilla del Santo Niño.

5:42 p.m. A large mountain lion was reported in Abiquiú.

7:47 p.m. A Western Winds Motel caller reported a piece of plastic was taken off his truck and he thinks a homeless woman did it.

9:21 p.m. A Walmart caller said someone keyed his vehicle.

11:19 p.m. A Calle del Sol caller reported two homeless people tried to break into the house.

July 23

8:30 a.m. An El Mirador employee got to work and said there’s a broken window at the building on La Joya Street.

8:33 a.m. A Chama caller said someone broke into his storage unit and took all his furniture.

9:20 a.m. A Coyote caller reported his neighbors shot his dog with a semi-automatic rifle.

10:44 a.m. A BOLO was issued for a GMC truck that was stolen.

11:19 a.m. A walk-in report for assault was taken at RASO.

1:28 p.m. A caller said there was a man bleeding at the entrance to the Santa Cruz Country Store.

1:56 p.m. A caller reported a vehicle was passing people in the median, then went into the opposite lane to pass people near Fairview Lane and North Riverside Drive.

2:26 p.m. A caller said a man was selling newspapers at the intersection of North McCurdy Road and Fairview Lane and was impeding traffic. The caller was very upset and said “if the chief doesn’t handle this, I’ll go to the governor’s office.”

2:35 p.m. An Ohkay Owingeh caller reported there might be a squatter in an abandoned home.

3:26 p.m. A Walgreens caller said a man is in the store and he’s responsible for lighting their trash cans on fire multiple times.

6:09 p.m. A Lowe’s Chama Valley Supermarket caller reported someone tried to use $640 in fake money earlier.

6:28 p.m. An Alcalde caller wanted to file a report because his fence was damaged by a vehicle.

10:48 p.m. A Hernandez caller could hear yelling and screaming in the area and heard two loud pops.
