Police Blotter: Can’t a Man Sing Without the Police Being Called?

The police blotter is published to give readers an abridged look at criminal activity in their community and neighborhood. It is simply an illustration of what local law enforcement, funded by taxpayers, must deal with daily throughout the Española Valley.

 Española Police officers, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies or State Police responded to the following calls:

  

Drunk and  Mumbling

Oct. 9

4:55 a.m. An East Jiron Street caller said a man threw a brick through the back window of his vehicle.

5:50 a.m. A caller reported a homeless camp is set up on a vacant lot on Camino Miramontes.

5:54 a.m. An Alcalde caller said a 36-year-old has been binge drinking for two weeks and is now having withdrawals.

7:22 a.m. A Truchas caller reported a person is illegally hunting on their property.

7:26 a.m. A caller said a man is crouched down with his pants down behind Zia Credit Union.

7:43 a.m. A caller reported her father, who has dementia, threatened to shoot her.

10:12 a.m. An Upper San Pedro Road caller heard two men on the road, yelling.

10:59 a.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man on North Riverside Drive and State Road 76 because he was jumping from the median to the road and back.

11:01 a.m. A Walmart caller said a man wearing camouflage tried to steal a bike.

2:50 p.m. A caller reported something is covered in a white blanket near the Ohkay Travel Center. It was just a blanket.

3 p.m. A caller said a man is at the bus stop near Century Bank with his pants down.

3:29 p.m. A Velarde caller reported his neighbors shot at him and they’ve been having ongoing issues.

3:31 p.m. A CVS caller said someone in a car pulled a gun and pointed it at them.

4:47 p.m. A Mesa Vista High School student was involved in an altercation in the restroom.

4:57 p.m. An El Guique caller reported his cousin’s ATV was stolen and they may have found it.

5:56 p.m. An East Pueblo Street caller said a person wrecked into the neighbor’s yard.

6:37 p.m. A Chili’s caller reported his Uber driver may have been shot.

8:04 p.m. A caller said a man walking on Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park Road appears drunk and is mumbling to himself.

9 p.m. An assault was reported in the Denny’s parking lot.

10:43 p.m. A Medanales caller said her husband broke her arm.

 

Yelling at  the Bushes

Oct. 10

1:45 a.m. A Cañones caller reported her husband hit her and her face is bleeding.

9:21 a.m. A person was camping on Windstream property.

9:25 a.m. A Velarde caller said two teens are hitting each other and they need law enforcement help.

10:22 a.m. A Las Lomas Apartments caller wanted to report a stolen package.

2:40 p.m. Officers went to the Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Courthouse because a man was being disorderly.

2:45 p.m. A man was trying to break the door at Motel 6.

2:48 p.m. A student tried to jump off the building at McCurdy Charter School. 

3:28 p.m. A CYFD caller said someone was trying to get into a vehicle with a metal slim Jim.

4:17 p.m. A Sacred Heart of Jesus Church caller reported someone stole her methadone bottles from her vehicle.

5:36 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a woman behind Zia Credit Union who was screaming and banging her head.

8:06 p.m. A Hernandez caller said a man is having suicidal thoughts and threatened to walk into traffic because they didn’t come home early enough.

8:33 p.m. An Abiquiú caller reported someone cut the trees on their property.

9:27 p.m. An officer was involved in a pursuit on North McCurdy Road and Simmons Lane.

9:50 p.m. A 420 Emporia caller said a man is outside the store, bothering customers. He had some purses and clothes the caller thinks he may have stolen.

10:05 a.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man at the Ohkay Casino because he’s in the parking lot, yelling at the bushes.

11:15 p.m. EZ-Way Laundromat was broken into.

 

What’s in the Barrel?

Oct. 11

12:19 a.m. A BOLO was issued for a woman who was involved in a carjacking in Mora. She stabbed the victim and took the vehicle, then abandoned it and fled on foot.

12:21 a.m. A death was reported in Ohkay Owingeh.

1:39 a.m. A DWI arrest was made on El Llano Road and North McCurdy Road.

4:07 a.m. A BOLO was issued for a woman involved in a stabbing on State Road 76.

7:01 a.m. A man was yelling at Walmart employees and checking the handles of vehicles in the parking lot.

9:16 a.m. A caller said a woman is in the middle of North Paseo de Oñate and is hitting herself.

9:27 a.m. A Calle Espinoza caller reported a man in all black is holding a rifle. The responding officer said it’s not a rifle, it’s just a piece of junk he’s using as a cane.

10:35 a.m. A Guadalupe Credit Union caller said a woman is kicking all the doors and screaming.

11:43 a.m. A fire was reported at the Vista del Rio Apartments.

1:26 p.m. An Española Hospital caller wanted to report a sexual assault.

1:33 p.m. A Hernandez caller said the neighbor is yelling cuss words.

4:14 p.m. A Camino de las Animas caller reported a man was screaming for help after three shots were heard.

4:28 p.m. A Speedway caller said a barrel was stolen from the store and it was brought back but has a lock on it and it’s heavy. They’re not sure what’s inside and want an officer to check it out.

4:57 p.m. An Española Elementary caller reported teens are vandalizing a sign at the front of the school.

5:51 p.m. A Hamm Parkway caller said his girlfriend is going crazy and trying to break his truck windows.

7:31 p.m. A Hernandez caller heard five shots fired in the area.

8:37 p.m. A Family Dollar in Abiquiú caller said a woman is throwing things in the store and getting belligerent with employees.

10:21 p.m. A Brazos Meadow Road caller wanted to speak with an officer about a missing hunter.

10:31 p.m. A West Calle Rosario caller reported a man got into a fight with someone and was hit in the head and is bleeding.

11:26 p.m. An El Guique Road caller said others are fighting her sister.

 

Drunk Neighbor

Oct. 12

12:20 a.m. A loud party was reported on Pima Road.

9:36 a.m. Someone attempted to pry open the door at Champion Car wash.

10:06 a.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man who had been outside Sacred Heart of Jesus Church since 6 a.m. and was staring at people and not saying anything.

10:57 a.m. A Velarde caller said her daughter and granddaughter are fighting and it’s getting physical.

12:20 p.m. A man stole a gallon of anti-freeze from Giant.

1:54 p.m. A man said he had children in his car and someone pointed a gun at him at Speedway.

2:15 p.m. A man was harassing a woman at Walmart.

3:12 p.m. A caller reported “some bum” appeared to be facilitating fights between dogs in an enclosure near El Parasol.

4:37 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on two children playing in the road at Cook’s Mobile Home Park.

5:10 p.m. A man’s death was reported in Chimayó.

5:16 p.m. An Abiquiú caller said her neighbor is shooting his gun again.

6:17 p.m. A man reported someone used his information to buy tires at Point S and he wants to file a report.

6:25 p.m. A La Mesilla caller said their daughter found a bullet hole in the window.

6:33 p.m. A Las Lomas Apartments caller reported a man is drunk and being belligerent to fellow tenants.

6:35 p.m. An Alcalde caller said their granddaughter might be on something; she’s arguing with family and breaking windows.

7:30 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a man who was walking around the park on Vietnam Veterans Memorial Road and talking to himself. The responding officer said the man was singing along to music.

10:05 p.m. A caller requested a welfare check on a truck that was parked at the gas pumps at Bode’s General Store and had the door open.

 

Listening to the Voices

Oct. 13

12:01 a.m. A fire was reported in Dixon, a structure was fully engulfed.

10:47 a.m. A Hernandez caller reported his gooseneck trailer was taken from his yard last night.

11:03 a.m. A caller requested a welfare check on an elderly man on Ash Loop who was outside, naked.

11:32 a.m. A caller reported her ex is harassing her on the phone. He’s saying he’s going to go to her workplace and make accusations and get her fired so he can take custody of the children.

11:55 a.m. A man’s death was reported in Tierra Amarilla.

2:37 p.m. A Calle Redonda caller said her neighbor asked her to call the police because a girl stole his phone.

7:29 p.m. An Ohkay Owingeh caller told a dispatcher that the voices told him to call, but they were going to leave.

9:37 p.m. A Thorton Lane caller said a man is very drunk, banging on her door and refusing to leave.

10:33 p.m. A Camino Cielo Grande caller was getting texts from her husband’s baby mama, saying she was going to her house with a bat to hit her in the face. She was also threatening the caller’s family.

 

Yelling at Customers

Oct. 14

3:13 a.m. A 420 Emporia caller said a man with a bat tried to hit an employee.

6:54 a.m. A San Pedro Sonic caller got to work to find the power out, but said there was no power outage. The breaker switch was turned off and the drive-thru window was open.

9:54 a.m. A Riley Road caller reported one of the Frito-Lay trucks was broken into the other night.

10:29 a.m. A woman went to EPD to report a man was masturbating in a vehicle near the lights on Paseo de Oñate and Fairview Lane. 

12:01 p.m. A caller said a child at Velarde Elementary is bullying her son. 

1:41 p.m. A La Mesilla caller reported his brother’s ex-wife went into the house and took items.

2:02 p.m. A Hernandez caller said a 17-year-old girl locked herself in the restroom and was threatening to kill herself.

2:03 p.m. An Española Elementary caller wanted an officer to take a report because a teacher was being put on leave.

3:07 p.m. A Southwest Cannabis caller reported a person is doing drugs behind the building.

3:31 p.m. An overdose was reported on Camino Habitat and State Road 30. A high dose of Narcan was administered.

3:49 p.m. A man at Center Market was following customers and asking to wash their vehicle windows.

5:12 p.m. A Dollar General in Hernandez caller said a man is in front of the store, but he went behind the counter and stole items. 

5:38 p.m. A Calle Romero caller reported his 13-year-old niece is assaulting her grandpa; she kicked him in the face and pinned him to the ground. The caller phoned again and said the girl hit her mother, father and auntie, now.

6:06 p.m. A Walgreens caller wanted a man who was yelling at customers to be removed.

10:27 p.m. An Alcalde caller said their son was hitting windows and took down a camera.

 

Unsafe Drivers

Oct. 15

8:36 a.m. A Peace Keepers caller reported an office window was broken.

9:28 a.m. A vehicle rollover was reported in Abiquiú with someone possibly trapped inside.

9:48 a.m. A Dixon caller said people in a pickup truck are going behind her property and cutting pine trees on BLM land.

12:35 p.m. A car was speeding through the Española Hospital parking lot and hit a vehicle.

1:51 p.m. A person was harassing customers going into Goodwill.

3:12 p.m. A car hit an electric pole near Holy Cross Church and knocked it down.

6:58 p.m. A Fairview Lane caller said a woman goes by and harasses her.

7:38 p.m. A caller reported there are four or five people huddled behind the old Rio Grande SUN building and they started a fire.

8:31 p.m. A Walmart caller said two women were fighting inside the store and some items were thrown.

10:36 p.m. An overdose was reported at McDonald’s.
