Police Blotter: Hitchhiker Asks for Ride in Man’s Yard

    Española Police, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, and Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies responded to the following calls:

Wal-Mart Targeted

Monday, March 22

    • 7:07 a.m. — A black and white dog was walking along State Road 76 with a trail of little puppies following, a caller reported.

    • 9:21 a.m. — A woman came to the Rio Arriba County Jail to report a stolen Ruger .22 caliber long rifle.

    • 10:43 a.m. — Police took a report about graffiti on the side of the Rio Grande SUN’s offices on North Railroad Avenue.

    • 10:52 a.m. — Police investigated a report of someone shoplifting tools from Walmart, then walking away toward a restaurant. Police claimed the man attempted to hide the tools behind a trash bin.

    • 1:53 p.m. — Two females were allegedly fighting at Española Middle School, according to police. The parents were told about the fighting.

    • 2:53 p.m. — A Highway 64 caller complained about goats in the area “just walking around.”

    • 4:06 p.m. — Walmart staff complained of a man attempting to shoplift beer, roses, cemetery flowers and a quart of oil.

    • 5:58 p.m. — A shirtless man walking east on State Route 76 fell after walking past the Las Lomas Apartment complex, according to a caller.

    • 8:07 p.m. — A man reported seeing people in a red Jeep and a blue Jeep fighting with one another on North Riverside Drive. He told police that the people involved had guns.

Tuesday, March 23

    • 1:10 a.m. — Police responded to a domestic dispute in which one female claimed a man she knew threw alcohol on her, which may have hit the bed because she later reported that the man was throwing water on the bed to cover up the alcohol.

    • 8:05 a.m. — Stray puppies were reported near the road along State Route 76.

    • 9:04 a.m. — A caller reported that a backhoe was on fire on Rio Arriba County Road 328.

    • 9:08 a.m. — An Española Valley High School student was suspected of possessing marijuana and drug paraphernalia, according to 911 dispatch logs.

    • 5:05 p.m. — Someone told police his daughter was attempting to leave a tanning salon on North Riverside Drive and she was being harassed by a group of males in a vehicle.

    • 8:22 p.m. — An allegedly intoxicated male was sitting beside the doors at Walmart “telling people off” and refusing to leave. He later said he was just waiting for someone to pick him up.

    • 11:46 p.m. — An Old Hospital Road caller complained about a black car with tinted windows, driving up and down his street at a high rate of speed. He said the vehicle was loud and kept waking his son up.

Collegiate Catfight

Wednesday, March 24

    • 8:25 a.m. — A fight between two female students was reported at Española Valley High School.

    • 8:57 a.m. — The lock was taken off the door to the Northern Rio Grande National Heritage office in the Española Misión y Convento, and it appeared that the building was broken into. However, it was not clear if anything was missing.

    • 9:20 a.m. — A bird was responsible for tripping the alarm in Walgreens during the night. Animal Control captured the bird and released it back into the wild.

    • 12:06 p.m. — Tools were stolen from three sheds on Lower San Pedro Road, according to a caller.

    • 1:01 p.m. — Two juvenile males were fighting on a baseball field at Valdez Park. A group of juveniles there scattered when police arrived, but one was apprehended and given to the teen court coordinator, according to the 911 logs.

    • 2:24 p.m. — There was a complaint of someone trafficking drugs on Calle De Alamo.

    • 2:37 p.m. — A pickup truck ran into a trailer on County Road 57. The caller told police that a male had not gotten out of the vehicle following the crash. The call log states someone was transported to Española Hospital.

    • 4:09 p.m. — A fight was reported at Northern New Mexico College. At least one female who was trying to leave in a white car was involved, according to a caller.

    • 7:31 p.m. — A man at State Route 76 said a possibly intoxicated man walked into his yard and asked for a ride. When he refused, the person told him to “wait until his car got shot up.”

    • 9:44 p.m. — A caller said a man was breaking windows at the Henry Valencia General Motors dealership. When a vehicle drove past him, he would jump onto the street and yell at it.

Cheap Shot

Thursday, March 25

    • 7:27 a.m. — A caller said a vehicle was upside down and in a tree on State Road 68. No one was inside the vehicle.

    • 4:37 p.m. — Two males were fighting outside the Española Recreation Center, according to a caller.

    • 4:39 p.m. — There was a complaint about a white Pontiac swerving across Upper San Pedro Road. Someone appeared to be tossing beer bottles out of the window of the vehicle.

    • 7:17 p.m. — Two men were fighting on County Road 41, a caller said. The caller reported one man attempted to walk away but the other hit him in the head with a rock. The victim was bleeding from his head and losing consciousness, according to the caller. The man was transported to the emergency room.

    • 9:24 p.m. — A caller reported a fight in the waiting room of the Española Hospital, but the parties calmed down. Later, a shirtless man was allegedly causing problems with the staff, according to a caller. Police stood by until the man could be checked by a doctor.

Unwanted Kisses

Friday, March 26

    • 8:21 a.m. — Cabinets and drawers were hanging open and things were “thrown everywhere,” according to a caller who reported a break—in at Chamisa Realty on Fairview Lane.

    • 1:02 p.m. — A caller complained that people were selling drugs from a black vehicle along State Road 76 near Las Lomas Apartments.

    • 1:13 p.m. — There was a report of a student assaulting a substitute teacher at Española Valley High School. The student’s parents were contacted.

    • 3:41 p.m. — There was a complaint of an elderly male forcefully kissing women at Calle Chamisal.

    • 8:32 p.m. — A traffic stop turned into a pursuit along County Road 86. The pursuit began at Alcalde Minimart, and the call log states that the subject was booked later that night.

Hammer Threat

Saturday, March 27

    • 8:48 a.m. — Workers stated they were attempting to trim branches near a ditch along County Road 56A when someone threatened to pull out a gun.

    • 9:01 a.m. — There was a brush fire reported at Private Drive 1547A. Emergency units left the scene at about 11:13 a.m.

    • 10:38 a.m. — A home and a Ford Mustang were hit with eggs on Chacoma Lane.

    • 2:37 p.m. — There was a brush fire at Private Drive 1045, which was contained and did not reach any buildings.

    • 5:07 p.m. — A caller asked police for help in getting a female in a blue sleeping bag out of the ditch behind the Methodist church on County Road 41. The woman was taken to the hospital, according to the incident report.

    • 8:03 p.m. — There was a complaint of a man near West Roman Drive harassing people. Someone told police the man threw a glass of water at him and threatened to beat him up. The caller told 911 dispatchers that if the man comes over again he will “hit (the man) with a hammer or something.” Police told him not to take any action against the man. The caller said he just wanted the police to be aware of the complaint.

    • 9:48 p.m. — There was a complaint of shots being fired near Tortilla Flats.
