Police Blotter: Man Howls at Moon, Digs for Gold

    Española Police officers, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police and State Police responded to the following calls:

Fast-Food Order Gives Employee a Fit

Monday, Feb. 9

    • 9:27 a.m. — An Allsup’s gas station employee said a woman broke a computer and fled southbound on Riverside Drive. Police took a report for criminal damage and disorderly conduct but did not catch the suspect.

    • 10:31 a.m. — A caller said someone stole a dog from inside the Española Animal Shelter. Española Animal Control officers discovered the dog wasn’t stolen but accidentally adopted. It had been located in Colorado.

    • 6:12 p.m. — A Wendy’s customer said she placed an order at the drive-thru, and when she requested they fix it, the employee “started yelling and threw a fit.” The issue was resolved before police arrived; the manager made the woman’s order.

    • 8:08 p.m. — A State Road 554 caller said his girlfriend was arguing with him. He called a second time to say she returned, slashed two tires on his car and was inside his house, where he was hiding in the bathroom. Police took a report for disorderly conduct.

    • 10:01 p.m. — A Camino del Sol caller said a man was revving his engine, yelling and screaming. When police arrived, the man “advised it was a full moon and he was yelling at the moon,” dispatch logs record. “I told him to go inside and keep it quiet.”

Tuesday, Feb. 10

    • 6:38 p.m. — A Middle San Pedro Road caller said her husband’s parents were taking items from her house while her husband was in jail. Española Police assisted Santa Clara Pueblo Tribal Police.

    • 6:53 p.m. — A Burger King customer said she was waiting in a long line at the drive-thru, and when she got up to the window, the employee refused her service because the employee was listening to her conversation. No report was taken.

Wednesday, Feb. 11

    • 9:29 a.m. — A Santa Clara Apartments caller said someone wrote on her door and walls near her apartment, and she was going to go to the suspect’s house to beat her. Police advised her not to go to the house; they would send an officer to resolve the situation.

    • 4:30 p.m. — A US Cable employee reported that a disgruntled customer swung at an employee. The employees decided not to give the man service.

    • 5:53 p.m. — A Trujillo Loop caller said some newspaper salesmen were stalling two lanes of traffic. The caller said she had sold papers for 28 years and that had never been done. No report was wanted.

    • 6:36 p.m. — A Rio Arriba County Road 1 caller said his neighbor’s cows were on his and another neighbor’s properties. The cows were eating the other neighbor’s hay. The livestock inspector was contacted.

    • 7:46 p.m. — A caller said he had “been observing a bright light in the sky that appeared to be a weather balloon and he just wanted (police) to make sure it was one.” Police reported they couldn’t find any UFO or lights in the sky.

    • 9:52 p.m. — A North Yucca Street caller said a drunk man wanted to fight everybody. The homeowners decided “they would feed him and he could stay.”

Thursday, Feb. 12

    • 1:23 p.m. — A Traveler’s Motel guest said his son went to get a car for the manager and the owner of the car “went out there and stated that if they touched his car that he was going to shoot him.” One man was served with a warrant.

    • 2:33 p.m. — An Old Hospital Road caller said his neighbor’s son was shooting at his Chevy Camaro with an air gun. The juvenile’s grandmother would not let police talk to him, so police said they would return later.

    •  6:55 p.m. — A caller said a couple of homeless people were living behind the trash cans at KFC. One man found in the area was advised to “move it somewhere else.”

    • 10:27 p.m. — A State Road 76 caller said a man, whom her mother had a restraining order against, was calling her for about a month. Now he had gotten out of jail and was calling “every five minutes or so.” No report was taken.

Speak Softly and Don’t Carry a Stick

Friday, Feb. 13

    • 8:55 a.m. — A Camino Fresca caller reported her eyeglasses and medication were missing.

    • 10:48 a.m. — A neighbor to the Camino del Sol man who was yelling at the moon reported he was harassing her and carrying a stick. Police determined the man was “digging for gold and it’s not there.” He was transported for medical attention.

Saturday, Feb. 14

    • 4:07 a.m. — A Las Lomas Apartments caller said a drunk man was at his house. He said the incident started the previous night at the movies, when his wife tripped over the man and his children. The man’s friend picked him up.

    • 12:15 p.m. — A Calle Redonda caller said her sister, who is also her neighbor, had been leaving inappropriate messages on her phone. Police took a report for harassment.

    • 2:35 p.m. — A McDonald’s employee said she left her McDonald’s hat at home and was loaned an extra by the manager, who took her car keys to make sure she returned the hat. The caller said she believed someone used the keys to get into her car and steal her cell phone. She called back to cancel, saying she found her phone at home.

    • 3:36 p.m. — A La Joya Apartments caller said a drunk man was in his mother’s vehicle, and his mother “does not know who he is and what he is doing.” He left before police arrived, but officers found him and advised him to stay away from the area.

Keymasters’ Help Unwelcome

Sunday, Feb. 15

    • 1:07 a.m. — A North Prince Drive caller said he was getting jumped. 911 dispatchers heard some men in the background asking for his keys and noted that it sounded like the men were trying to take his keys to prevent him from driving. Police at the scene confirmed “that is exactly what it was, he is going to go inside and sleep it off.”
