Police Blotter: Whimpering Animal Actually Malfunctioning Burglar Alarm

    Española Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police and State Police responded to the following calls:

Not Disney Approved

Monday, Feb. 8

    • 12:19 p.m. — A Chama woman reported that a man in a black Ford truck keeps shooting at her property. She said no one has been hurt, but she’s just tired of him shooting at her yard. Deputies couldn’t find the suspect.

    • 2:45 p.m. — A group of eight differently-colored horses were galloping down State Road 74 near Truchas, according to several callers.

    • 3 p.m. — A woman in a Mickey Mouse sweatshirt showed up to the Motor Vehicle Department drunk and missing most of her paperwork, staff said.

    • 4:24 p.m. — Some individuals damaged property at the Echo Amphitheater and almost ran over a man, National Forest Service staff said.

    • 6:17 p.m. — A Dixon woman reported that her father was trying to hit her with the phone and with a metal object. Police determined the caller and the father had argued over him being drunk, but he did not strike her.

12-Year Search for Missing Man

Tuesday, Feb. 9

    • 12:22 a.m. — A Chama woman said her daughter’s ex-husband kept calling to harass her and make sexual remarks.

    • 1:49 a.m. — An Arroyo Seco caller said a drug dealer lives in a trailer near his house and keeps the cocaine in the pocket of a leather jacket in his closet.

    • 6:27 a.m. — A Hermaston, Ore., caller was looking for a man who went missing in that town 12 years ago.

    • 8:09 a.m. — Workers at the Del Norte Credit Union construction site on Vietnam Veterans Memorial Park Road said someone stripped about $800 worth of copper wire from the building. Police advised Gallegos Scrap Metal to be on the lookout for the stolen wire.

    • 10:21 a.m. — Five laptop computers were taken from Northern New Mexico College and 15 have gone missing since the college took an inventory in October, an employee reported.

    • 12:41 p.m. — An Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo woman asked police to take a report for gasoline that was stolen from her vehicle.

    • 1:04 p.m. — A caller reported a drunken man showed up at her house, broke a bottle of beer  and threatened her. She insisted police take a report over the phone because she “does not want a cop at her house.”

    • 2:15 p.m. — An elderly man called to report a telemarketer.

    • 5:44 p.m. — A man with a tattoo on the back of his head stole a $90 headlight from Auto Zone, staff reported.

Hatchet-Wielding Youths

Wednesday, Feb. 10

    • 10:16 a.m. — A man reported someone stole an air compressor, a chain saw and a saw from his garage the previous night.

    • 12:46 p.m. — A man walked into the Española Police Station to report that a woman at Los Niños Kindergarten Center was stalking him.

    • 4:18 p.m. — Officers confiscated a hatchet from a group of juveniles.

    • 5:45 p.m. — A man tried to steal two purses from Wal-Mart, according to 911 dispatch logs. Police cited him for trespassing.

    • 7:49 p.m. — A man was reportedly beating a woman with a stick by the racetrack in Medanales.

    • 8:20 p.m. — A female caller said she could hear something whimpering from behind the EZ Way Laundry, but she didn’t know what type of animal it was. Police determined the sound came from a burglar alarm that had been acting up since the previous day.

    • 10:39 p.m. — Two men ran off with two 12-packs of beer from the San Pedro Shell gas station, staff said. Employees could not provide a description of the men.

Squatters Flee

Thursday, Feb. 11

    • 7:06 a.m. — A North Carolina caller said her ex-husband was sending her text messages asking whether 18 sleeping pills is enough to kill himself. She asked officers to check on him, and to tell him to stop sending her messages.

    • 7:24 a.m. — An officer checking up on a report of a car that had been parked and running all morning in the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo found a woman sleeping inside. The woman told police she had been involved in a domestic dispute and was trying to sleep it off.

    • 1:08 p.m. — A woman reported receiving threatening phone calls at her home and that now she was staying at a friend’s house. The woman requested police go to her home and get her belongings.

    • 1:50 p.m. — A man called to report two males were saying a lot of bad words and triggered the alarm trying to get in through the back door of the Family Dollar in Española. The men told police they were just leaning against the door; they were advised to leave the area.

    • 4:19 p.m. — An Arizona man came to winterize his house on State Road 76 across from Dan’s Liquors and reported homeless people living inside the house. Two women in brown clothes took off running when he pulled up to the house, and no one else was inside, the man reported.

    • 5:11 p.m. — A man called from Red’s Steakhouse to report a stolen car trailer.

    • 5:16 p.m. — Multiple callers reported that there were cows in the middle of State Road 68 near the Ohkay Casino.

    • 8:21 p.m. — A woman called to report a domestic battery. When police arrived, she told them there was no battery and her boyfriend had returned her keys.

    • 9:16 p.m. — An El Rito woman called to report her daughter was threatening to kill herself with a pair of very sharp scissors.

I Am Not My Brother

Friday, Feb. 12

    • 11:54 a.m. — A woman called to report two males and one female in a white pickup truck taking aluminum skirting from her home. The woman said the same people had tried to take a refrigerator the other day.

    • 12:41 p.m. — An elderly man was reportedly drinking miniature bottles of alcohol while entering city limits, according to dispatch logs.

    • 2:13 p.m. — A man caller reported that his brother has been using the caller’s identity. The caller said his brother has been trying to get into the military but was not able to because of outstanding warrants.

    • 3:29 p.m. A call from the Ohkay Owingeh Travel Center reported a very intoxicated man walking down the median of State Road 68. Police dropped the man off at his residence on Sesame Street.

    • 7:42 p.m. — A Calle del Pajarito caller reported several neighbors had been shooting off bottle rockets for six days, and they were landing on surrounding houses.

    • 9:29 p.m. — Police went to a Hunter Street parking lot to investigate a call about an ongoing fight involving an unknown number of people.

    • 10:22 p.m. — A woman called to report the back window of her car had been broken out while she was at a game at McCurdy School.

    • 11:34 p.m. — State Police investigated a call reporting four males shooting weapons into the air near the Delancy Street Foundation in Alcalde.

Citizen’s Search

Saturday, Feb. 13

    • 1:03 a.m. — A man called to report several juveniles jumped out of a silver Chevrolet Cobalt and began doing graffiti near North McCurdy Road and Calle Sin Nombre.

    • 7:10 a.m. — An Española woman called to report she had just woken up and someone had hit her gate and left the area.

    • 8:15 a.m. — A woman called to report that two dogs had killed her geese. She told police she would call back when she was finished picking up a dog trap.

    • 9:04 a.m. — A man and woman reportedly stole a pack of cigarettes from Wal-Mart.

Guard Not a Prowler

Sunday, Feb. 14

    • 1:03 a.m. — Police responded to a call that an 11-year-old girl had a large bump on her head from being hit with a walker.

    • 6:59 a.m. — A woman called to report that a pit bull was stolen from her yard sometime the previous night.

    • 11:15 a.m. — A man at the Big Rock Casino reported that someone had used his card for a $400 charge. The man refused to answer questions about who had access to the card when police arrived and said he wanted nothing further done.

    • 3:14 p.m. — A man called to report finding a bag full of needles.

    • 4:39 p.m. — A caller reported that two males in black jackets and jeans fled the Church of Christ on North Riverside Drive, both with pockets full of quarters and change.

    • 5:30 p.m. — A woman called to report a suspicious man wearing all black walking around Holy Cross Catholic School. The officer reported it was the security guard who wears all black and sometimes a face mask due to the cold.
