Police Receive Delayed Report of Child Hit by Car

Española Police are investigating an April 13 incident which a car ran over a 3-year-old boy as he reached for a ball.

Española Public Safety Chief Joe Martinez said police are considering whether charges should be filed because neither the family of the boy nor the woman accused of hitting him, reported the incident. The boy was hit near a trailer park on Paseo De Paulina, according to Martinez and 911 dispatch logs.

Martinez could not confirm the boy’s name but dispatch logs list a 3-year-old by the name of Juan Pablo Cortez. The woman involved in the accident reportedly did not see the boy as she was backing up to leave for work. Police planned to speak with her Tuesday about the incident, according to Martinez.

Police did not learn of the incident until April 16, when the boy was released from medical care and the family called dispatch to file a report, according to Martinez. Martinez said the boy was alive, but as of Tuesday he did not know the extent of his injuries.

Martinez said the boy’s family, who are from Mexico, transported the boy to Española Hospital, where he was flown to a hospital in Albuquerque for treatment.
