Jaydn Martinez, Española Valley Boys Basketball
Martinez led the Sundevils to a win over Aztec with a fantastic 26 points, 13 in both the first and second half, keeping the team steady on offense and in the post. A nagging injury made a noticeable impact on the rest of the team, while he still contributed eight points in a loss to Pecos while limited, he had to miss the last game of the weekend, and his absence was felt in the loss to Pojoaque.
Rhianna Padilla, Española Valley Girls Basketball
Padilla led the Sundevils through the Al Armendariz Tournament as the team’s leading scorer over the weekend. She led the team to a momentum-building win over Capital with a team-high 17 points, including a 9-of-10 mark from the free-throw line, plus nine rebounds. And she makes her mark as a senior leader on a young Española team.
Amarissa Quintana, Mesa Vista Girls Basketball
The Lady Trojan senior was a key force in a major upset win over Taos, with 15 points, including 10-for-15 free-throw shooting, and key points in the fourth quarter of the win. She added three steals in the win, cementing Mesa Vista as one of the top small-school teams in the state. Quintana added another 13 points, seven rebounds and seven steals in a win over Cuba two days later.
Derek Sanchez, Pojoaque Valley Boys Basketball
Sanchez rebounded from a tough outing in the Al Armendariz Tournament semifinal with a fantastic performance to top Española Valley with 30 points, including 12 in the fourth quarter to pull away at the end. Earlier in the season, Sanchez scored 37 points in a big win over Gallup as he looks to lead Pojoaque to a strong season.
