POLL: Pick the September 22 Athlete of the Week

Published:

Voting ends at 2 p.m. on Tuesday

Neveah Cachora, Española Valley Cross Country

The Sundevil freshman has had a great start to the season, and continued to improve at the Rio Rancho Jamboree on Saturday. Cachora finished in 15th place in the championship girls race, running a time of 21:39 on the challenging Rio Rancho course, placing second among all 4A runners in the race, while also pushing teammate Hailey Renteria to further improvement.

Jack Purdy, Española Valley Football

The Sundevils’ winning streak continued on the field, and they show power on both offense and defense. It was Purdy’s turn to step up in the backfield on Friday, a role he is familiar with from last year, as he scored two touchdowns and ran for 75 yards. Purdy continues to make a defensive impact, using his speed to compensate for his height at cornerback, and he recorded five tackles.

Aubrey Cordova, McCurdy Cross Country

Cordova, who broke out at last year’s state championship, ran two minutes faster than her time a year ago in Rio Rancho, an improvement enough to grab fifth place in the girls varsity race. She was best among all 2A runners in the varsity race (though her 22:25 time would have been just behind two Peñasco runners and one from Laguna-Acoma in the championship race). Cordova will continue to guide a young Bobcats team through the season.
