   Sheriff Ruben Maestas was forced off Hwy 64 just north of Española while pursuing some Texas deer hunters who had sideswiped a local man’s truck. While chasing the Texans, the sheriff tried to pass to the left of a motorist who was turning left. The result was Maestas was hit and skidded about 130 feet.

    No one was injured but the unsuspecting man making the left, Fernando Hernandez, was shaken up. He was cited for failing to yield to an emergency vehicle.

    The local fund drive for girl scouts began this week. Volunteers were hoping to raise $1,000, “for continuing and expanding services that will help girls in the area develop skills, talents and strong character traits that will make adolescence a sturdy bridge between childhood and creative maturity.”

    A second voucher, asking for $12.96 in mileage was cut to $8.96 and will be paid to Mrs. Trujillo by the Village.

    Sebedio Benavides spent Tuesday night in Española Hospital after accidentally shooting himself in the leg with a .22 caliber automatic pistol.
