Football: Escalante 58, Navajo Prep 6
The Lobos (2-1) had no issue running all over Navajo Prep (0-2) in a dominant win.
The game comes a year after Escalante beat Navajo Prep at home 22-14 in a come-from-behind thriller, and the Eagles would go on to make the 3A postseason.
“We played a fairly complete game,” said Escalante coach Rico DeYapp.
The Lobos had their biggest success running to the outside against a stacked middle, and Trey Archuleta and Luka Torrez feasted on the ground.
Navajo Prep recovered an onside kick at the start of the game, but Escalante forced a turnover on downs and quickly scored their first of eight touchdowns on a long run from Torrez.
Later in the game, Marcelo Baeza returned an interception for a touchdown.
Archuleta finished with 16 carries for 139 yards and four touchdowns, and added a passing touchdown. Torrez ran for 216 yards on eight carries and scored twice.
The Sept. 1 win marked the second-straight blowout win over a larger school, after a 28-0 win over Tohatchi on Aug. 28.
Escalante plays its first same-classification school on Friday with a trip to Estancia (0-3) as they look to avenge last year’s 63-20 loss in a tough road environment.
“We can play this game on the moon,” DeYapp said.
