McCurdy Honors Coach Cecil Brown
Cecil Brown graduated from McCurdy Mission back in 1963. He was a part of the state championship football team.
Over 60 years later, he is still a key part of the McCurdy family as an assistant coach on the football team, and he plans to again coach the boys track team in the spring.
Brown told Athletic Director and Head Football Coach Robert Nevarez that — if an 80-year-old can be president, why can’t one be a football coach?
At their Oct. 21 game, the Bobcats dedicated the scoreboard at the football field to Brown, and plan to install a permanent display before next season. And then Brown received a water bucket bath.
“He’s just as much a part of this campus as the Pringle building or Chick Martinez Field,” Nevarez said. Brown, Nevarez pointed out, is part of a long line of great longtime coaches at McCurdy.
Brown has been coaching at the school, between football and track, since 1988, when his son was a football star. Parents of players on the team played under Brown. Soon, potentially, grandparents will have. And he has no plans to stop anytime soon.
Meanwhile, the Bobcats (6-3) finished the season with a 62-12 thrashing of Laguna-Acoma (2-7) at home. Just about everyone got to play, even though the game ended sooner than Nevarez expected, and freshman Devin Ortiz scored two touchdowns.
“From start to finish, it was one of the more complete games we’ve played in a while,” Nevarez said.
McCurdy finishes a strong season with six wins, having ran through their non-district schedule. With more talent coming up from middle school, McCurdy football seems to be on the upswing.
“We didn’t accomplish everything that we wanted this year,” Nevarez said. “It was a decent year, it was a good year, a lot to grow on.”
Bobcat Volleyball on a Hot Streak
The McCurdy Lady Bobcats (10-4) won their sixth-straight match on Oct. 19 in a five-set thriller against Questa (9-5).
McCurdy dropped the first two sets 25-23, 25-18. Then they rallied, winning 25-19 in the third set and 25-17 in the fourth. And in the tiebreaking fifth set, they came out on top 15-12 to win the match.
It was their third win in three days, having taken down Mora (3-11) and Mesa Vista (1-12) in the two days before.
The Bobcats now sit at 4-0 in the district and have a real chance to make it to state after a series of down years, losing all of their district matches over the last two years.
Their streak of success sets up a first-place matchup with Escalante — who also won their first four district matches. They play in Tierra Amarilla on Tuesday evening.
