Running is always big up North and the local cross country athletes turned in several noteworthy performances last week.
Girls Cross Country
Sept. 26
Pojoaque Valley
Neveah Cachora landed atop the podium with the fastest time of 20 minutes, 24 seconds in the Capital City Invite in Santa Fe, leading the Elkettes to a third place finish out of five teams. Christiana Branch followed in seventh place with a time of 21:51, followed by Candi Romero in 15th with 23:56.
Sept. 27
McCurdy
Led by Marisol Serna’s sixth place finish in 23:43, the Lady Bobcats took second in the Nick Martin Memorial Invitational course in Sandia Park with 65 points. Avery Knight was not far behind in 16th in 25:12, while Isabella Archuleta and Kaylee Martinez raced in together in 21st and 22nd in 26:16 and 26:20 respectively.
Dulce
The Lady Hawks’ Jayanna Petago finished the Martin Invite in 27:46 to take 32nd.
Mesa Vista
Mirella De La Cruz was 40th in the Martin Invite in 29:17, followed by Magaly De La Cruz at 45th in 30:02.

The Elks didn’t have a complete team in the Capital City Invite, but Elijah Martinez was sixth in 8:25, with José Ponce 34th in 23:41, followed by Deionne Flordeliz in 36th in 23:53.
Sept. 27
Mesa Vista
Ezequiel Nevarez blistered through the Nick Martin Memorial Invitational course at Sandia Park in 18:40 to finish third and spark the Trojans to a team win over a loaded field with 63 points. Jonathan Martinez was not far behind, taking fifth in 18:45, with Andres Valdez 11th in 19:45, Noah Ortiz 26th in 21:10 and Dominic Lopez 29th in 21:18.
McCurdy
The Bobcats finished eighth overall in the Martin Invite with 211 points and were led by Aaron Martinez in 20:44, taking 21st. He was followed by Nicholas Martinez taking 25th in 21:10, then Ethan Bolton, who was 53rd in 22:25.
Dulce
Kash Trosper ran the Martin Invite in 21:29, leading the Hawks to an 11th place finish with 261 points. Markol Vicenti was 54th in 22:25 and Ian Gomez 59th at 22:40.
Coronado
The Leopards were 14th overall in the Martin Invite with 333 points, 14th, with Eli Martinez leading the way in a time of 21:18, good for 27th. He was followed by Lonisio Vialpando, who was 81st in 24:35, Jeremiah Padilla, 87th in 25:07.

Capital 3, Española Valley 1
The visiting Lady Sundevils (3-7), dropped a tough match to the Lady Jaguars, 25-17, 21-25, 25-19, 25-9. Española had no answer for Capital’s hitters, who recorded 49 kills, including 12 each from Amaya Batista and Aria Alvarez.

Oak Grove Classical Academy 3, McCurdy 1
The Lady Bobcats (8-2) struggled early, regained some momentum than faded late against the Lady Owls in losing 25-19, 25-22, 21-25, 25-19.

The Elkettes’ (2-10) trip to Albuquerque turned sour in a 25-15, 25-7, 25-10 loss to the Lady Huskies.
Northwest 3, Coronado 1
Mia Gallegos had 10 kills and Chastelyn Jaramillo added six, while Tracea Negale had five aces and five blocks but it wasn’t enough for the host Lady Leopards (2-5) to overcome the Lady Falcons in a 25-23, 25-15, 20-25, 25-19 loss.

Each set was bitterly fought, but the host Lady Sundevils (3-8) could not come up with the big play when needed in losing 25-23, 25-23, 30-28 to the Lady Blue Griffins.

The host Elkettes (2-11) were unable to manage much offense against the Lady Eagles in losing 25-15, 25-23, 25-16.

The Lady Leopards (3-5) turned in a strong outing in Albuquerque as Mia Gallegos had 22 kills with seven aces and Natalie Chacon added nines aces, while Dyntette Salazar put up 30 assists in a wild 22-25, 25-10, 25-19, 20-25, 15-12 win.

The host Lady Sundevils broke a four-match loss, sweeping the Lady Pirates 25-15, 25-16, 25-16.

Julian Caballero and José Lujan each squeezed off three shots and Raudel Rivera came up with nine saves for the visiting Elks (0-11), but it wasn’t enough to hold off the Jaguars.

The Elks (0-13) turned in one of their best outings of the season, allowing the fewest goals and getting off four shots on goal. Raudel Rivera recorded nine saves in the effort.
