Sacred Obligation

Published:

I’m not saying adults in our society shouldn’t be held responsible for their actions and behaviors. Most adults understand actions have consequences and most know the range of consequences expected for particular behaviors. Like driving drunk.

What I am saying is those of us who associate with and accompany individuals who do drink alcohol have an almost sacred obligation to look out for the safety of the drinker to make sure, real sure, that potential disastrous behaviors like driving drunk, don’t happen.

I wonder to what degree blame for not preventing, not intervening, to prevent disastrous results falls on the shoulders of those of us who perhaps don’t care enough to intervene when the need is evident.

How many instances where drunk driving turns into a pandora’s box of hurt, destruction, expense, embarrassment and irretrievable self-esteem might be prevented if we made an effort to prevent our drinking buddies from getting behind the wheel? When will we ever learn?
