Sports on Deck: August 31

Here’s what’s coming up in Northern New Mexico in the week ahead:

Wednesday, Aug. 31

Volleyball: Pecos vs. Escalante

The Lady Lobos (2-0) started the year with a good four-set win over Tohatchi on Saturday, and they look to continue that hot streak. They lose much of the front-row talent from their state tournament run, but setter Emma Maestas and hitter Brycelyn Martinez remain a commanding force. They faced Santa Fe Indian School (3-0) after press deadline on Tuesday, and should continue to cruise against the Lady Panthers (0-3) on Wednesday. Another great test for Escalante comes on Sept. 6 against Cuba (4-0).

Thursday, Sept. 1

Football: Escalante vs. Navajo Prep

The Eagles (0-1) seem to have possibly taken a step back from last year, when they were a strong 3A tournament team that placed close in Tierra Amarilla before Escalante came back for a second-half win. The 2A Lobos (1-1) can continue the momentum from their win over Tohatchi if they pick up a second-straight victory over a higher-classification team before hitting the meat of their non-district schedule. Luka Torrez and Trey Archuleta will continue to lead the way for this squad.

Friday, Sept. 2

Football: McCurdy vs. Española Valley

The Sundevils (0-2) have a seemingly must-win game against its neighbor less than one-fifth the size, if they want to prove they are a serious team this year. But the Bobcats (0-2) are sure to put up a fight, and both coaches expect a difficult game. Española still seeks its first non-forfeit win since 2019, while McCurdy wants wins anywhere they can find them given the challenge in their schedule. The pass-first Sudnevils against the run-first Bobcats will be a fun clash of styles.

Tuesday, Sept. 6

Volleyball: Miyamura vs. Pojoaque

The Elkettes (1-0), looking to return with another deep state tournament run, have quite the challenges at the beginning of their schedule. They took down Robertson (1-1) in four sets on Tuesday night, handing the Cardinals their first loss in three years. Then, a match a week later comes against the Patriots (3-0), who missed last year’s playoffs but look to be much improved after the start of their schedule. Sonya Quintana and Anica Urioste anchor the front row for Pojoaque, while they add new starters at setter and libero.
