Here’s what’s coming up in Northern New Mexico in the week ahead:

Wednesday, Sept. 29

Volleyball: New Mexico School for the Deaf vs Coronado

The Leopards (6-2) have gotten off to a great start to the season after coming on strong in the tail half of 2021. They look to ride that momentum into district play in the crowded 8-team District 7-1A. The Roadrunners (5-1) have also been strong to start the year, led by sophomore outside hitter Angelique Quinonez.

Football: Pojoaque vs Robertson

The start of the season has been tough for the Elks (0-4) as they faced as tough a schedule as you could ask for, with their most winnable game getting rained out. That has resulted in a score deficit of 202-6. But they have a better chance this week. While Robertson (3-2) is the defending 3A state champions, they have taken a step back this year, though they come off a 54-0 win.

Tuesday, Oct. 4

Volleyball: Los Alamos vs Espanola Valley

District play starts, and the Sundevils (2-10) get a big test right away, as the Hilltoppers (8-4) rate as one of the state’s top teams. A young Española team will need to figure out how to win together quickly to improve on last year’s 0-10 district mark. Los Alamos is led by junior setter Angelina Passalacqua, one of the top setters in the state.

Volleyball: Taos vs. Pojoaque Valley

The Elkettes (10-2) lost a close four-set match that they would love to have back against reigning state champion Hope Christian, who has looked vulnerable early in the season. But Pojoaque will take the rest of their momentum into the start of district play, and a home match against the Tigers (5-6) to start off the year. Taos boasts two strong blockers in Chloe MacHardy and Kiona Ely, who will make life difficult for the Elkette hitters.
