Alcalde residents Joseph Montoya and Jeff Medina each bought tree-cutting permits Dec. 12 from the U.S. Forest Service ranger station in El Rito, then drove north into the Carson National Forest to harvest a Christmas tree. The two men, accompanied by Medina’s girlfriend, Donna Gasca, and Montoya’s cocker spaniel, Honey, spent about two hours seeking out two suitable Douglas firs, chopping them down with an axe and hauling them back to town.
