What Recycling Program?

Española’s recycling program? Recycle what?

Española’s recycling program is a joke. Saturday I took a load of recyclable material to the collection point to have it almost all turned away. Yes, they actually checked to see what I had.

Rejected items were shredded computer paper, clean cardboard packaging, most of which was marked by the manufacturer as recyclable or please recycle. Common sense says the type of material I had would represent about 85 percent or more of the type of material Americans put in the land fill.

So what did I do? I took it home, put it in plastic bags and put it into my trash can to be picked up next garbage collection day. What a good environmentally aware citizen of Española I am.

In addition to shear bewilderment about what can really be recycled. I have real questions about the efficiency and value of the program as it now exists. I also have two questions about the restrictions on curb side pickup.

Where are you supposed to get paper bags in which to bundle your newspapers so they will be picked up?

Am I really supposed to take the caps off of my soda and water bottles before they can be recycled?

Come on, North Central Solid Waste Authority, give us a recycling program that is worth the effort, or forget the whole thing and save Espanola’s citizens a bunch of money. I really want to recycle, but get very little help from the local authorities.
