When “Affordable” Costs $156 Million

Published:

Long gone are the days when a politician would fake interest in Earth Day by spending a few hours outside planting a tree for a photo-op. Today, much more is expected. And when I say more, I mean more of your money. And when I say much, I mean $7 billion.

Such was the case on this Earth Day in Santa Fe.

President Biden joined New York Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez noted the day by announcing $7 billion dollars to buy even more of his solar panels. Not to be left out, New Mexico Governor Lujan Grisham joined in the glee by announcing our state would receive $156 million of those dollars to help usher in their green utopia.

To sum it up: Joe Biden is spending billions of your money to try and entice young voters to his re-election campaign in November and Michelle Lujan Grisham wants you to celebrate that New Mexico is getting less than 2.3 percent of it. I guess they feel that instead of planting a tree, cutting down more of them to print more money is good for the Earth. Following the science and all that.

For a moment, let’s put aside the fact that Lujan Grisham, who prides herself on her adherence to the climate agenda, couldn’t be bothered to do more than send out a press release for Earth Day.

However, the worst part of the whole fiasco is that she described New Mexico’s $156 million windfall as a key step in buying more “affordable” solar power.

I know inflation has hit the price of the Governor’s wagyu budget pretty hard, but is it so bad that she now thinks a project with a $156 million price tag is affordable? In hindsight, perhaps that explains a lot of her spending decisions.

Make no mistake: the billions promised by Biden and millions celebrated by Michelle will not help new Mexicans.

They quickly skirt aside the fact that less than 2 percent of the solar panels manufactured in the world are made in the USA. They ignore the well-known fact that China is responsible for 95 percent of the solar panel supply chain. That’s who will be making money from our tax dollars.

You might recall it was last August when Governor Lujan Grisham tried to fix that problem by announcing a solar manufacturer planned to open a facility in the Albuquerque area. She promised the project would bring $4.5 billion to the state.

Sadly, if you take a look at the stock price for the company on the date of the announcement, it was priced at $23.47 per share. As of this week, that same stock pace dipped to as low as $1.81. I’m no financial expert, but that doesn’t seem like great performance.

To anyone paying attention it is now beyond clear the “affordable” climate agenda and all its toys are financially unstable without billions of our taxpayer dollars to prop it up.

This year has seen the EV bubble burst across the world and there is little doubt this massive solar spending will become yet another Solyndra for Joe Biden and those like our Governor who follow him down this road.

Next time, they should just plant a tree.
