In the sports article titled United in Defeat (Rio Grande SUN, Nov. 12, 2009 page B!) featuring the short comings of the Pojoaque Elks Cross Country was more of the same.
The article should have featured the Santa Fe Indian School Running Braves’ outstanding and total domination of the state AAA cross country meet. There are two members on the Running Braves team from the Heart of Indian Country, Trevor Merhege and Justin Naranjo, Santa Clara Pueblo.
I believe it’s time (Sports Editor George) Morse gives credit when its due. In my recollections of sports the lead article is about the champion who won and how hard the first place team worked to get to the top of the podium. If you would have seen the reception given to the class AAA state cross country champions at the end, you would have seen the emotion that went into that run from parents, staff, students and cross country enthusiasts.
I am one who is very proud of the Running Braves and say, way to go, hard work does pay off and to Morse, let’s give credit to Indian Country when it is truly due. After all this paper does cover Northern New Mexico sports and last time I looked at the New Mexico map Santa Fe Indian School is in the North.

(Editor’s Note: While we try to cover all local athletes, those who attend Santa Fe schools aren’t going to get the same attention as local athletes in local schools. George Morse is one person covering boys and girls sports in seven school districts in the north, excluding Santa Fe.)
