(SUNfoto by George Morse) Northern New Mexico College student Tim Martinez directs water from the Garcia Acequia onto a field of blue corn, an heirloom crop in the Española Valley. The field is managed under the Sostenga program, which promotes sustainable agriculture and local food production. The acequia system was introduced by the Spanish settlers and has its origins in the Arab world. Acequia is derived from the Arabic word “as-seqiya,” meaning carrier of water.
