A letter was recently submitted to the Santa Fe New Mexican by Dallett Norris, which was titled “No apologies necessary, governor.”
The letter was rife with unfounded accusations and fiery criticisms of Española Mayor Javier Sanchez. She erroneously assumed the mayor’s rebuttal to the governor’s comments about the alleged lack of mask wearing in our Northern New Mexico village was “geared to stir up trouble.” Talk about plucking an incendiary remark from thin air.
The mayor is hardly a trouble-maker. He is a decent man exhibiting strong leadership by taking a stand on statements that were misguided to say the least. The mayor has, from the onset, taken measures to ensure his community adheres to protocols established by the state to prevent the spread of COVID.
Furthermore, the governor appropriately apologized because what she observed as she drove through Española was a fleeting and superficial glimpse of what is actually occurring there. My respect to her for accepting she was wrong.
On my frequent visits to Española, I have always observed everyone wearing masks in restaurants, stores and when in close proximity to one another. Mayor Sanchez is a progressive leader who works tirelessly to make things better for his constituents.
Dallett Norris would be best served by not casting imputations based on mindless whims.
