Scammers seeking financial information are blanketing Northern New Mexico with bogus messages claiming to be from the Española-based Valley National Bank.
The fraud was initiated Jan. 16 around 4:30 p.m. and included e-mails, text messages and voice messages targeting area cell-phone numbers, Bank spokesman Gino Brazil said.
Brazil said as of Tuesday afternoon, the so-called “phishing” scam had expanded to include land-line numbers. The fake calls and messages tell the recipient, who may or may not be a Bank customer, that there is a problem with their account, Brazil said.
“Anyone who did reply to a call or text or email should be aware that their account information may be compromised,” Brazil said.
The Bank is advising anyone who responded to an uninitiated request for information to call (800) 523-4175 to cancel their credit and debit cards.
