Village Clerk Agnes Trujillo was fired Tuesday night for “inefficiency” and she promptly demanded a “full and complete audit” of her books “by a fair, impartial and neutral auditor.”
Named at the same meeting of the village of trustees to succeed Mrs. Trujillo was Mrs. Oliver Haas, of Española.
Village councilmen Tuesday night voted to purchase 153 new “locked canister” type collection boxes for parking meters after Mayor Cipriano Vigil declared that “the way we have been handling it is not very safe.”
A representative of the company demonstrating the meters said the meters would cost $5.46 each.
An editorial addressed the Village’s inability to hire permanently the entire city police force. The Council has been rehiring the rookie force on a temporary basis for three meetings now. The problem was born when chief Tom Gonzales resigned because of “ineptness and political activities.” Much of the force resigned with him forcing the Council to hire cops on a temporary basis and search for a new chief.

A 16-year-old Española girl was taken to Santa Fe Tuesday evening to face juvenile authorities after she was charged with knifing a 15-year-old classmate. The fight started when one girl called the other “chicken.”
The unemployment number for the Valley was 557, down 40 from the same time the previous August. State employment office manager M.D. Garcia said the Colorado potato harvest took some people off the rolls.
A delegation of residents from the Lybrook area of western Rio Arriba County Monday requested culverts and two bridges for the road through largo Canyon. County commissioners promised to do everything possible to supply the culverts but said the bridges would have to be considered before anything was done.
Yvonne Sandoval was crowned Española High School homecoming queen by football co-captain Levi Gurule. Queen’s attendants were Connie Martinez, Ernestine Martinez and Annadelle Serna.
In a very tight 6-6 game, the Taos Tigers ground out a touchdown with 22 seconds left in the third quarter to take a 12-6 lead. The Hornets could not score in the last quarter and lost the homecoming game.
A half gallon of ice cream was 59 cents and blankets were $3.98 at Bond Willard. Mac Chevrolet had a four-year anniversary sale and had two 1958 demos on the lot, one impala and one station wagon.
