The New Mexico Media Literacy Project is offering eight $500 prizes for winning entries in its third annual Talk Back to Big Tobacco! script and storyboard contest.
New Mexico youth ages 12 to 18 may submit 30-second radio and television commercials aimed at preventing tobacco use by children and teens.
Entries must be postmarked by Dec. 12.
Scripts can focus on the dangers of smoking, the tobacco industry’s deceptive marketing tactics, or why so many young people choose to live tobacco-free lives.
In New Mexico, smoking rates are higher among high school students than adults. The Project is particularly interested in scripts aimed at youth from low-income households and rural communities, Native American youth, lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender youth and youth with disabilities.
A panel of media and tobacco prevention experts will select eight contest winners — four TV storyboards and four radio scripts. In addition to the $500 cash prizes, winners have a chance to win $5,000 if their ad is chosen for statewide radio or TV broadcast.
The winning radio scripts will be produced at KUNM, and the winning TV storyboards will be produced at Albuquerque Community Access Channel 27.
For complete contest rules, entry forms and resources visit www.talkback.nmmlp.org or call 858-8897.
