The deadline to submit an announcement for Northern Briefs is Monday at noon, the week of publication. The SUN only publishes free events and activities in Northern Briefs. All announcements for arts and crafts fairs will be forwarded to the advertising department.
Abiquiú Dam
Meeting
The United States Army Corps of Engineers will host a public meeting Wednesday (10/15) at 6 p.m. at Abiquiú Lake. The Corps is initiating maintenance activities to stabilize a rock slope adjacent to the dam’s northern abutment. A construction contract has been awarded, and construction activities will include rock blasting. For more information, call 685-4371.

Foster Care Walk
The Rio Arriba and Los Alamos Foster Parent Association is partnering with the National Foster Parent Association to host New Mexico’s only Foster Care Awareness Walk Saturday on the Plaza de Española. Registration is at 10:00 a.m. and the walk begins at 11:00 a.m. There will be information booths, food and beverages, music, face painting and a balloon animal artist. Walk Against Drugs
The annual Youth Walk Against Drugs will begin Saturday at 9 a.m. from St. Anne’s Catholic Church, in Alcalde. Walkers should arrive at 8 a.m. They will finish at San Juan Catholic Church on the Ohkay Owingeh Pueblo, and a free hot dog lunch will be available for all walkers. Drum Workshop
Akeem Ayanniyi will lead a free African drumming circle and workshop Oct. 25 from 1 to 3:30 p.m. at the Hands Across Cultures Teen Center, in Arroyo Seco. Disabilities Input
The New Mexico Developmental Disabilities Planning Council will host a public forum Oct. 30 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Española Recreation Center. The Council is gathering public input on issues and trends affecting people with disabilities, including employment, education, health, child care, housing, recreation, transportation and community supports. Veterans Transport
Disabled American Veterans is providing transportation from Española to the Veterans Administration Hospital in Albuquerque Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. The bus leaves at 6 a.m. from the Dandy Burger restaurant on Riverside Drive in Española. It will return at approximately 1:30 p.m. Passengers are asked to contact Merijildo Ortega at 351-4405 at least one day prior to travel.

County Fair Meeting
The Rio Arriba County Fair Association will hold its annual meeting Oct. 14 at 6:30 p.m. in building 122 of the Rural Events Center in Abiquiú. A New Board of Directors will be elected. The annual meeting allows paid members to vote. All members and interested citizens are welcome to attend.
