    Española Police officers, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies and State Police responded to the following calls:

Hammer Brought to Knife Fight

Monday, April 25

    • 2:54 a.m. — A Taos Lane caller said seven people beat him up at his sister’s house.

    • 9:29 a.m. — A Private Drive 1511 caller said there was a fight in which one man was armed with a hammer and another man was armed with a knife.

    • 11:11 a.m. — A Private Drive 1403 caller complained that his neighbor dug a trench through his property without his permission.

    • 3:40 p.m. — A Private Drive 1549 caller said a man kept sending her text messages saying he was going to shoot her.

    • 4:50 p.m. — A Wal-Mart caller said a man who had been caught shoplifting from the store in the past was in the electronics department, but he had not shoplifted anything. Police had a foot pursuit with someone by Wendy’s restaurant and this person was jumping fences while carrying a duffel bag full of items. An elderly woman on Valley Drive flagged down police and said the man was hiding in a garbage can, but had since left.

    • 8:01 p.m. — An Ash Loop woman went to check on a home her mother used to live in and could hear someone screaming inside. Police were not able to find anything suspicious at the home.

    • 10:26 p.m. — A North McCurdy Road and Fairview Lane caller said there was a fight and people were screaming. The caller said there was a man walking to the high school with a shotgun, screaming “come and get me.” Police put one person in custody for questioning and transported one person to the hospital in an ambulance.

Dog Bests Rio Grande

Tuesday, April 26

    • 1:14 a.m. — A Camino Carlos caller said someone threw rocks at her house. An officer said the suspect started throwing rocks again. The officer said an intoxicated woman drove to the house and threw up on herself and her car.

    • 10:57 a.m. — A Center Market caller said a male shoplifter was fighting employees at the store and throwing things.

    • 1:21 p.m. — An Earth Lane caller said her neighbor’s pit bull was loose and comes to her home every day trying to fight with her dogs. The caller said the pit pull chases her when she gets out of her car.

    • 7:03 p.m. — A Paseo de Oñate caller said a dog was stranded on a “little island” in the Rio Grande near the Oñate Bridge. An Española Fire Department caller said the dog swam away.

Forgot to Steal Belt

Wednesday, April 27

    • 9:09 a.m. — A Wal-Mart caller said two boys were in the sporting goods section trying to steal things. She said they both hid pellet guns inside the waistbands to their pants. Later, the caller reported that the boys were running toward Lowe’s and one of the boys’ pants were falling down.

    • 1:02 p.m. — A Century Bank caller said the grounds manager found a bloody knife on the south side of the building.

    • 2:19 p.m. — A Water Store caller found a syringe underneath a tree.

    • 5:17 p.m. — A Private Drive 1001 caller said she got home from work and found all 15 of her chickens had been killed. The caller said this happened before in the winter. She suspected a neighbor of killing them.

    • 8:20 p.m. — A Santa Claran Hotel and Casino caller said his brother, who had a warrant out for his arrest, hit the caller and threw him on the floor. Police could not find the man.

Newsflash: Stoners Like Burritos

Thursday, April 28

    • 1:29 a.m. — A Santa Clara Apartments caller said a man was yelling at a woman, saying he was going to punch her for heroin. Police could not find the fighting couple.

    • 10:06 a.m. — A North Railroad Avenue caller reported seeing a dead horse in a field. An animal control officer checked on the horse and said it was just taking a nap.

    • 10:39 a.m. — Police were told to be on the lookout for a man in a maroon Chevy Trailblazer, who was said to be suicidal and had a gun with a bullet. The man was somewhere between Amarillo, Texas, and a rest stop in Chama. The man called someone and told them he had a scanner, knew the cops were looking for him and that he was on foot and didn’t have a gun. The man said he buried the gun in a cemetery six years ago.

    • 12:27 p.m. — An El Parasol caller said there was a Dodge Caliber with tinted windows parked behind the restaurant and the caller could smell marijuana coming from it.

Friday, April 29

    • 6:17 a.m. — A Giant Gas Station caller said a man with a possibly stolen purse was telling people he was selling gas at half-price.

    • 9:10 a.m. — A Highway 68 caller said a vehicle with a trailer full of metal was dropping metal all over the road.

    • 1 p.m. — A Paseo Don Juan caller said a man was smoking marijuana and asked a family member to perform a sex act on him.

    • 1:13 p.m. — A Pinch Penny Wash-O-Mat caller said someone stole his clothes.

    • 2:46 p.m. — A Paseo de Oñate caller said someone was walking on the Oñate Bridge, jumping on and off the sidewalk and flipping off cars. The caller said the man was cursing at people who would not give him a ride.

    • 5:16 p.m. — An Ohkay Casino caller said about seven men were outside in the hotel parking lot. The men were drunk and fighting. The caller said they were asked to leave.

    • 7:54 p.m. — A Las Lomas Apartments caller said a drunk man in a brown flannel shirt with blue jeans was stumbling in and out of a lane of traffic. The caller said the man rolled down a hill.

Impractical Suicide Attempt

Saturday, April 30

    • 11:36 a.m. — A County Road 126 caller said there were puppies in an irrigation ditch.

    • 2:48 p.m. — A Comfort Inn caller said someone there was trying to choke himself with an ironing board. The man was very depressed because he thought his friend was dead.

    • 4:51 p.m. — A Star Lane caller said someone broke into her home and smashed a window with a rock.

    • 6:27 p.m. — A Race Track Road caller said someone was by the baseball field pointing a long rifle at houses. An Ohkay Owingeh officer told the man not to pull a gun out in a residential area.

    • 7:16 p.m. — An AutoZone caller said his car was shot at and his window was shattered. Police thought the window was shot with a pellet gun.

    • 7:19 p.m. — A McDonald’s caller said a man with a 10-year-old child in his car went through the drive-thru and the man was drinking beer.

    • 9:19 p.m. — A West Jonathon Drive caller said a man and two women got out of a silver car, beat him, then stole his wallet. 

Haircut Alibi Fails

Sunday, May 1

    • 1:57 a.m. — A woman came into the Española Police Department to say she was at the Santa Claran Hotel and Casino when someone there scratched her and grabbed a cup of water out of her hand. She said she was bleeding but didn’t need an ambulance.

    • 2:22 a.m. — A Santa Claran Hotel and Casino caller said a man wearing a Dallas Cowboys jersey, who was accompanied by three other people, pulled a gun out. She said the people were pushed out of the room and went into the parking lot.

    • 12:12 p.m. — A Hindi Avenue caller said there were a lot of people outside fighting. The caller said the people were armed with baseball bats.

    • 6:33 p.m. — A Gladys Lane caller said his cousin attacked him. The man said he was cutting his cousin’s hair and his cousin got mad at the way he cut it. Police reported later that the actual attacker was the person who made the call. Police said the suspect hit another man over the head with a drawer.
