Police Blotter: Demented Man Wields Pruning Scissors

    Española Police, Ohkay Owingeh Tribal Police, Rio Arriba County Sheriff’s deputies and State Police responded to the following calls:

Monday, May 18

    • 7:14 a.m. — An Española Military Academy employee said someone broke into the school, vandalized some property and set off fire alarms. A fire extinguisher with a fingerprint on it was taken into evidence.

    • 10:37 a.m. — A La Villita caller said his aunt wanted him removed from the house and was dropping him off the side of the road. No report was taken.

    • 12:45 p.m. — A Truchas caller reported that someone stole their pit bulls.

    • 1:13 p.m. — A San Pedro Shell gas station employee said she needed assistance in retrieving keys from a former employee. The station decided to give the woman three days to return the keys on her own.

    • 1:42 p.m. — A caller said a man outside of Lowe’s Super Save went up to his car to ask if he wanted to buy piñon, then stole his wallet. Police took a report.

    • 7:01 p.m. —  911 dispatchers could hear some women, who had called from a State Road 76 address, screaming “Ya llego.” It turned out one of the women’s grandfathers has dementia and wanted to hit her mother. The women retrieved big pruning scissors from him. He wasn’t transported to jail or the hospital, as the women decided to try to let him calm down for awhile.

Restraining Order Can’t Restrain Lady

Tuesday, May 19

    • 7:36 a.m. — A Rio Arriba County Road 162 caller requested that police disperse some people who were trespassing in his yard. Police could only find a man working in the ditch.

    • 8:15 a.m. — A caller said a woman she has a restraining order against took pictures of her and made profane hand gestures when she was dropping her children off at Abiquiú Elementary.

    • 9:37 a.m.   — A Paseo Melendez caller said her neighbor keeps parking halfway up her driveway. She said she didn’t want to tell her neighbor to move their car because she was difficult to communicate with.

    • 6:34 p.m. — A Calle Lopez caller said she wanted her son removed from her house because he only wants money from her and she’s tired of it. He left before police arrived. She wanted to give police a key to her house in case he returned, but they declined.

    • 7:47 p.m. — A Sunset Drive caller said his cousin struck his uncle with some rocks but didn’t want a report taken.

Wednesday, May 20

    • 7:00 a.m. — The snack bar at Valdez Park was burglarized.

    • 7:36 a.m. — A Wal-Mart employee said a coworker was harassing her at work by approaching her in the meat department and saying profanities to her face. Police documented the information.

    • 10:59 a.m. — A Garcia Tires caller said someone in a red Pontiac stopped behind his business and threw some used tires out of the vehicle.

    • 11:17 a.m.— An Abiquiú Realty caller said the cook at Abiquiú Inn witnessed someone in a white truck stealing furniture off the porch. Police took a report.

    • 9:35 p.m. — A Private Drive 1020 caller said her daughter’s ex-boyfriend was calling and harassing her.

Suspects Tell Victim Not To Worry

Thursday, May 21

    • 9:07 a.m. — A caller said some people in the front yard of a home near San Juan Elementary were throwing rocks at passing cars.    

    • 6:06 p.m. — A Greenfield Road caller said two men damaged his fence, and when he confronted them then told him not to worry about it. Police weren’t able to contact either the suspects or the reporting party.

    • 8:20 p.m. — A caller said a man in front of Española Valley High School was jumping in front of vehicles. Police saw someone run and dive somewhere, but couldn’t find him.

    • 8:35 p.m. — A North Riverside Drive caller said her daughter took an Electronic Benefits Card to buy milk for the children and should have already returned. The mother was afraid she was exchanging the card for drugs. She said she would give her daughter a little more time to see if she would bring it back.

Friday, May 22

    • 2:45 a.m. — An Ohkay Casino employee said he noticed a lot of traffic to one motel room and was afraid its occupants were selling drugs.

    • 9:45 a.m. — A County Road 74 caller said a man was arguing with his uncles and punches were exchanged. Police took a report.

    • 12:08 p.m. — Some people behind Bank of America were yelling at each other, a caller said.

    • 1:22 p.m. — A caller said a man in the Española area was saying bad things about her. No report was taken.

    • 1:36 p.m. — A caller said a drunk man was harassing community service workers. The same man had caused a disturbance the previous day at the Española Recreation Center.

Saturday, May 23

    • 3:23 a.m. — A Calle del Pajarito caller said a couple were screaming and yelling at each other.

    • 12:20 p.m. — A caller requested a welfare check on her 73-year-old mother on Sandy Lane because her verbally abusive son was living with her. The son turned out to be upset because he had to do chores.

    • 2:41 p.m. — A Guachupangue Road caller said he came home and found someone had tried to steal his car. He said the steering column was damaged. Police took a report.

    •  6:32 p.m. — A caller said five teenagers at Valdez Park were throwing rocks at people and a dog.

    • 7:51 p.m. — A Movie Gallery employee said someone stole some movies, and when the employee confronted him he said he did it because he had a late fee.

Sunday, May 24

    • 12:10 a.m. — A Sage Lane caller said a man was throwing things around, yelling and trying to hit people. No report was wanted.

    • 12:44 a.m. — A Villa Del Norte caller requested police remove his friend, who was outside knocking on his door. There was no sign of the friend when police arrived at the home.

    • 3:16 p.m. — A State Road 76 caller said he suspected a friend he had been partying with took an envelope with his tax return in it. Police assisted the caller with the possible theft.

    • 9:06 p.m. — A Wal-Mart caller said a couple who were known for shoplifting were confronted by security and started making threats. The man then pulled down his pants and mooned the caller. Police discovered that the couple had stolen some baby clothes. Police took a report.
