Preparing for the Upcoming Season

Published:

The planting conditions have not been promising with the snow pack hovering between 32-41%, which translates to a very minimal runoff and thus minimal irrigation available.

Recalling the 2025 growing season, irrigation ended near mid-June in El Rito and there was very low flow in Ojo Caliente.

Growers must keep this in mind for planning for the upcoming season. Based on the snow pack, growers must make a decision whether to plant or not to plant.

That decision is still a few months off based on what the weather brings, but it does not preclude pre-planning in case conditions improve to allow for successful planting and growing. Growers should begin with creating a gardening plot map for all of the produce one is craving. Certain staples are required and must be planned for: chile, Calabaza Mexicana, melons, Concho corn, carrots, Straight-eight cucumbers and so much more,

After the plot map is created, growers must make sure they have adequate seed stores for their planting needs.

Most of the seed stores are in our personal stock of heirloom landrace produce and we are fortunate. Other produce must be purchased from sources that are known for quality seed.

Thorough clearing of one’s plot must be completed and of course, cleaning the acequias is a must and one cannot start too early.

With water being such a priority, a decision must be made later this year, but we cannot stay our preparations.

Mejor estar listo de que estar atrasado (better to be ready than to be behind and late).
