New state rules and licensure requirements governing the practice of tattooing, body piercing and other “body art” services are going into effect, and artists and businesses must submit license applications by Nov. 12.
Artists and body-art facility owners can visit the state Regulation and Licensing Department’s web site for their licensure application and to pay the $100 application fee. The address is www.rld.state.nm.us/BarbersCosmetologists/licensing.html.
Individuals currently practicing in New Mexico can obtain a license by paying the required fee and passing a test on the requirements set by the new law.
New Mexico was one of the only states with no regulations for body artists. In 2007 the state legislature passed a law requiring the Board of Barbers and Cosmetologists to develop licensure requirements. The new rules are intended to safeguard public health by insuring that practitioners maintain proper hygienic standards.
The application process will change after the Nov. 12 deadline and it will be considerably harder to gain licensure. Regardless of experience, anyone practicing after the deadline will be required to complete a 40-hour theory course, state board exam and provide proof of a 1,500-hour apprenticeship.
