More than 1,700 New Mexico public-land deer permits, 20 elk licenses for mobility impaired hunters, and 231 Javelina licenses leftover from the 2009-2010 drawing will be available beginning Aug. 19 at 10 a.m.

The deer permits are for hunts in game management units where the number of permits or licenses exceeded the number of applicants. They will be available — first-come, first-serve — for an application fee of $9 for residents and $12 for nonresidents. Applications will be accepted only on the state Game and Fish Department’s Web site, www.wildlife.state.nm.us.

Deer hunt permits will be issued as soon as the applicant’s credit card is approved for the application fee. Deer hunters then must purchase an over-the-counter deer license. Elk and javelina licenses will be issued when the applicant’s credit card is approved for the license fee and the application fee. All hunters also must have a Habitat Management and Access Validation, and, if hunting on federal lands, a Habitat Stamp.

Twenty leftover deer permits are youth-only hunts with any legal weapon. All other leftover deer permits are for archery-only or muzzleloader archery hunts. All leftover elk licenses are muzzleloader hunts. A preliminary list of available permits and licenses will be listed on the Department web site.

For more information, and to view and apply for the extra deer and elk hunting opportunities, visit www.wildlife.state.nm.us. Hunters can call 476-8087 for information, but only online applications will be accepted.
