Wild Horses Up for Adoption

    The federal Forest Service is offering 46 wild horses for adoption in Farmington.

    Carson National Forest officials began gathering the horses Aug. 1 from the Jicarilla Wild Horse Territory to reduce grazing. The Territory’s horse population is estimated at 413. A 2004 study had determined the Territory can support a population of 50 to 105 horses.

    The horses gathered so far will be available to the public on a first-come, first-serve basis during two scheduled adoption weekends at the Browning Ranch at 333 Browning Parkway in Farmington. Scheduled adoption dates are Friday and Sept. 25 from 12 p.m. to 5 p.m., and Saturday and Sept. 26 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The horses are also available for viewing by appointment by calling 486-2493.
