The Capital High School Jaguars were celebrating the 20th anniversary of their school’s founding with a homecoming game against the Pojoaque Elks Sept. 26. The Elks couldn’t spoil the party and Capital preyed upon Pojoaque in a 48-0 romp.
Suiting up just 16 players against the Jaguars, the Elks were outmanned and outgunned. Capital led 7-0 at the end of the first quarter, then scored 28 unanswered points in the second quarter to take a 35-0 lead.
Pojoaque’s best chance to score came at the end of the first half. The Elks drove down to Capital’s 12-yard line, but a pass into the end zone by quarterback Mike Garcia was intercepted after his receiver got tangled up with a Capital defender. The Jaguars took over possession despite Pojoaque’s protest that pass interference had occurred on the play.
Pojoaque used up nearly eight minutes of the third quarter on its opening drive of the second half, but the drive stalled at Capital’s 23-yard line and the Elks punted the ball back to the Jaguars, who then drove 99 yards for a touchdown.
Pojoaque fell to 2-3 on the season. The Elks host Grants in their homecoming game Saturday.
